Nathaniel and Planteur add new Group One winners & No Nay Never, Showcasing, Dark Angel, Excelebration and Cape Cross sire new stakes winners

Fourth Group One winner for Nathaniel
The Newsells Park-based sire Nathaniel (Galileo) sired his fourth Group One winner on Thursday when the William Jarvis-trained Lady Bowthorpe (5 m ex Maglietta Fina by Verglas) won the Nassau Stakes (Gr 1, 1m2f). Under Kieran Shoemark, Lady Bowthorpe kept on well in the closing stages to score by a length and a half from Zeyaadah (Tamayuz) with Joan Of Arc (Galileo) another half length back in third. 

"I was confident she'd stay, I was a little bit worried about Roger's (Varian) filly (Zeyaadah), she wasn't stopping, but I knew we've got that great turn of foot – that's her real strength,” said Jarvis. 

"She's relaxed, she's settling so much better now, she's a superstar. She's not had the luck, she's had to come back and she has.

"She's a very, very special mare to train and she's owned by a delightful owner, she gives me free rein though of course we discuss things – she's superb."

Bought for 82,000gns by James Toller from Book 2 of the 2017 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, Lady Bowthorpe finished second in the Lockinge Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) behind Palace Pier (Kingman) at Newbury back in May and her sires other Group One winners, Enable, God Given and Channel, are all females. 

Stakes double for No Nay Never 
Coolmore Stud’s No Nay Never (Scat Daddy) sired a stakes double at Goodwood on Wednesday with Alcohol Free (3 f ex Plying by Hard Spun) winning her third Group One race in the Sussex Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) while in the race prior, Armor (2 c ex Hestia by High Chaparral) became the 31st stakes winner for his sire when he won the Molecomb Stakes (Gr 3, 5f). 

Trained by Richard Hannon, Armor raced prominently towards the near side under jockey Ryan Moore. Asked for his run with 200 metres left to travel, he quickened impressively to take the lead and pulled away to score by three and a quarter lengths over the favourite Fearby (Havana Gold). 

"I've not made too many flash entries for him, but we'll look at something like the Morny now, Flying Childers,” said Hannon. 

First Group One winner for Planteur
Planteur (Danehill Dancer) sired his first Group One winner when Trueshan (5 g ex Shao Line by General Holme) took out the Goodwood Cup (Gr 1, 2m) at Goodwood on Tuesday. The Alan King-trained gelding was confidently ridden by Hollie Doyle in the depleted field due to rain affected ground. The short-priced favourite scored by four lengths over Away He Goes (Farhh) with a further length and a half lengths back to Sir Ron Priestley (Australia) in third. Four-time winner Stradivarius (Sea The Stars) was a late scratching from the race due to the soft conditions. Planteur was a 31,000gns purchase by Highflyer Bloodstock and Alan King at the 2018 Tattersalls Guineas Breeze Up Sale.

11 for Excelebration
The OTI Racing-owned Ottoman Emperor (3 c ex Ibiza Empress by Tertullian) stepped up to stakes company on Thursday and in winning the Gordon Stakes (Gr 3, 1m4f) became the 11th stakes winner for former Coolmore Australia shuttler Excelebration (Exceed And Excel). Trained by Johnny Murtagh, Ottoman Emperor took the lead with 200 metres left to travel and held off SIr Lucan (Camelot) to score by a half length. The favourite, Third Realm (Sea The Stars), was another length and a quarter back in third. Ottoman Emperor is now likely to be aimed at the St Leger (Gr 1, 1m6f) at Doncaster. 

“He’s a little bit babyish, we don’t really know how good he is or how good he can be, coming to the top of the hill he (Ben Coen - jockey) said he lost his balance a little bit and then he grabbed hold and really became strong,” said Murtagh. 

“He got to the front a bit soon, but he wasn’t stopping once the other horses got to him, he put his head down.

“One thing about him is he’s really genuine and really tough, I think he stays the distance really well.” 

53 for Showcasing
Former Haunui Farm shuttler Showcasing (Oasis Dream) notched up his 53rd stakes winner when Asymmetric (2 c ex Swirral Edge by Hellvelyn) won Thursday’s Richmond Stakes (Gr 2, 6f). After settling towards the rear of the seven runners, Asymmetric showed a good turn of foot to take the lead inside the closing stages and did enough to beat Khunan (Twilight Son) by a half length, with Ebro River (Galileo Gold) a close third.  Asymmetric is now the winner of three of his four career starts, while he also finished second in the July stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at Newmarket on 8 July. 

"He's in the Gimcrack, he is entered in the Group One (Prix Morny) in France, we'll see what the team want to do,” said winning trainer Alan King. 

The colt was most recently bought by Stephen Hillen Bloodstock for 150,000gns at the Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale and was bought by Paul Harley Bloodstock for 65,000gns at the Tattersalls December Yearling Sale last year from the draft of Redpender Stud.
 

49th Group winner for Sea The Stars
The William Haggas-trained and Shadwell Estate Company homebred Baaeed (3 c ex Aghareed by Kingmambo) was impressive in winning Friday’s Thoroughbred Stakes (Gr 3, 1m) and in doing so became the 49th Group winner for his sire Sea The Stars (Cape Cross). Under Jim Crowley, Baaeed pulled away to an easy six and a half length victory over El Drama (Lope De Vega) and is now unbeaten in four career starts, all over a mile, having broken his maiden at Leicester on 7 June.

“I didn’t (see him as a miler) to start with, but I said to Jim and Angus (Gold) there, I can’t see any point in going up in trip from here at the moment. We’ll keep him at a mile, I don’t know where we’ll go,” said Haggas.

“The three races he’s in are the Jacques le Marois, the Celebration Mile and the Moulin at Longchamp.”

Sea The Stars has sired 81 stakes winners to date. 

74 for Dark Angel
Dark Angel (Acclamation) sired his 74th stakes winner when Angel Blue (2 c ex De La Vie by Galileo) won the Vintage Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) at Goodwood on Tuesday. Angel Blue, who was backing up quickly after finishing second in the Pat Eddery Stakes (Listed, 7f) last Saturday at Ascot, scored by three quarters of a length over Berkshire Shadow (Dark Angel) with another length back to Austrian Theory (Awtaad) in third. Angel Blue was a €100,000 purchase from the Arqana Deauville Select Yearling Sale and is out of a sister to Highland Reel, winner of the 2014 Vintage Stakes. The same connections of owner Marc Chan and trainer Ralph Beckett teamed up in the following race when Kinross (Kingman), a previous stakes winner, narrowly won the Lennox Stakes (Gr 2, 7f).

122 for Cape Cross
Friday’s Glorious Stakes (Gr 3, 1m4f) was won by the Saeed bin Suroor-trained Passion And Glory (5 g ex Potent Embrace by Street Cry) who provided Cape Cross (Green Desert) with his 122nd stakes winner. The Godolphin homebred was taken straight to the front and held on to score by a neck from Euchen Glen (Authorized), with the same distance back to Fox Tal (Sea The Stars) in third. Darley’s Cape Cross died in April 2017 at Kildangan Stud in Ireland at the age of 23.
