Flotus dominant in Champion 2YO Trophy at Ripon
Flotus (2 f ex Floriade by Invincible Spirit) returned to winning ways on Monday and scored an impressive four and a half length victory in the Ripon Champion 2YO Trophy Stakes (Listed, 6f). In doing so, she became the 21st stakes winner for her Rosemont Stud shuttle sire Starspangledbanner (Choisir).
Taking the lead within the final 200 metres, the Simon and Ed Crisford-trained Flotus, who had been unplaced in her last three starts, pulled away in the closing stages to record an easy victory over Hellomydarlin (Galileo Gold), with the favourite, Atomic Lady (Kodiac), another length and a half away in third.
"She's a really talented filly, and when I won on her first time I really liked her,” said winning jockey Silvestre de Sousa who won on the filly back in May when she made a winning debut at Goodwood.
"She's a typical sprinter, just likes to get on with the job, and I didn't complicate things today.
"Drawn two is never ideal here, especially with speedy horses on your left.
"But she jumped smart, she travelled and she quickened (again) when I wanted her to. From halfway, I thought I was a winner."
Flotus is out of the winning Invincible Spirit (Green Desert) mare Floriade who is a sister to the stakes placed filly Lottie Dod and a half-sister to the Group Two placed Rockaway Valley (Holy Roman Emperor).
Flotus was sold for €65,000 by Newtown Stud to Glenvale Stud at the Goffs November Foal Sale in 2019 before being bought by Arthur Hoyeau at Book 1 of last year’s Tattersalls October Yearling Sale for 125,000gns.
Newtown Stud will offer her half-brother by Camacho (Danehill) at next month’s Goffs Orby Yearling Sale.
Starspangledbanner’s 2021 fee is seat at $16,500 (inc GST).
