Another Queensland raider turned up and stole the show in the Alinghi.
The Brisbane-trained Liesele was eased from her wide barrier (14) and settled second last.
She then improved along the rails approaching the turn, saving many lengths. She went to third at the 200m, then switched across heels and finished too well to score, going away by three quarter lengths. It was a good win and an excellent ride by Damian Browne.
Sumakaray was seventh on the rails, moved to third on straightening and continued to get inside runs to take the lead at the 200m. She then fought on nicely for second, finding the winner a little too strong in the closing stages.
The top weight Lonhspresso (59kg) was tenth on the rails, improved nicely to fourth at the 300m but was held up for a clear run until passing the 100m. She then ran on quite well for an encouraging first-up third.
Avoid Lightning was eighth between runners to the 600m, switched into the clear on straightening and kept battling on for fourth while Member’s Joy ran on well from last at the turn for two and half lengths fifth.
The favourite She Can Skate ($4) drove through from her good barrier (3) to get to the lead nearing the 600m, but she tired over the latter stages to finish three lengths sixth.
