A fourth Australian bred winner in a row for the G1 1000 Guineas (1600m) and it is sending a message as they only had two in the field namely the impressive winner Platinum Witness and the odds on flop O’Marilyn. The honour roll of Australian breds started with Planet Rock in 2011 then Rollout The Carpet in 2012 and last year the quinella with Costa Viva over the atrociously and arrogantly ridden Bounding. The shame about the win by Platinum Witness today is the Riccarton track was so biased and over-watered in the days leading up that it takes away from a clearly talented filly. No leader won all day and the inner lanes were go-slow areas so the whole day of finishes were contested in the middle part of the home straight or wider. It was a surreal day of racing on a supposed Good3 rated track (by NZ officials and stipes) when in every race the vast bulk of the field got angled into the middle of the track near the home turn. The track was presented in a manmade biased state and looked terrible as each race took place with it worth mentioning fine weather in play all day and some wind that supposedly does dry things out. Platinum Witness had finished a sound fourth in the G1 2000 Guineas (1600m) last week here against the colts and geldings so is a tough and talented filly. She raced handy last week and the winner sat outside the pace to clock 1:35 with the filly four lengths adrift at the finish. Today she won by over a length in 1:36.32 so this G1 was run and won some eight lengths inferior to the 2000 Guineas. The over-watering helped this filly for sure plus she was ridden cold and came down the outer with a thunderous burst. One significant honour does belong to the breeders Peter and Philip Vela as they bred both dams of the G1 3yo features. They bred Indomitable (mum of Turn Me Loose)) and Chartreuse (mum of Platinum Witness. The runner up Darci’s Dream was game in defeat because she worked to the lead and kicked clear the run home after being angled wider as almost every runner was doing on such a manmade biased track through over-watering the days beforehand. The third finisher Belle Miraaj did her South Island stable proud and came though closer in than anything else though again it must be noted riders were angling off many widths the run home as the middle lanes were paved with gold. Matakana ran on well and should get even better over summer and into the autumn as she has scope. Consensus ran on okay all things considered but her trainer Leo Molloy would not have been impressed with the over-watered track and he is not one to suffer fools. Dramatist could not even get the lead and she just plugged away after settling better than midfield the outer. O’Marilyn was exposed big time when stopping to finish seventh beaten over six lengths as an odds on runner. The track is a possible stopper as it ruined almost every other favourites chances bar two on the ten race card. More likely is the mile found her out plus add in the trip to Riccarton from the North Island to the South Island has gutted many a racehorse before. Caramac ran on okay closer in than anything from the back and will win her share of races this season. Avisto, Flaming and Bonniegirl were terrible as the last trio home beaten between sixteen and twenty-four lengths. The winner Platinum Witness should run 2000m no worries but any further will be on class alone and she has it in spades. She is tough and can be ridden different ways plus is thriving on racing. The three times she has missed a top three spot all could have or should have resulted in a dividend paid. Not sure the form through Darci’s Dream and Belle Miraaj is entirely trustable as both like rain-affected footing (former likes cut in the ground and later can swim). The merit however of Darci’s Dream was in fact leading and hanging onto second looking at the day's manmade biased disaster for leaders (none won). Kudos the winner and the training feat by Lisa Latta, who is building an impressive resume when she travels and attacks blacktype and in particular G1 races. It was the second win in the race this century by a Central Districts stable with Dorabella in 2006 saluting for the Otaki based Howie and Lorraine Matthews. The ride by Darryl Bradley was a cracker as he summed up the manmade track bias and lanes to detonate on down too a tee.
