Red Eclipse wins 2015 Spring Stakes Group 3 $120,000 at Morphettville (SA), 1200m.
Seven-year-old Red Eclipse surprised by stepping up from winning a Benchmark 82 (1250m) here on last week to taking out this Group Three race. He was slowly away from his inside barrier (1) but recovered along the rails to settle in seventh place. He got a split rounding the home turn, got through to second at the 200m, hit the front at the 100m and then went on to win well after a good inside trip.
Whitlam was eighth, wide with cover, fanned deep at the home turn and then ran on well for a good second.
Richie's Vibe was third on the rails, got through on the inner nearing the home turn and went to the front on straightening. He then battled on well for third after having every chance.
Favourite Riziz began well from his wide barrier (11) and worked, at a solid early pace (first 600m 34.65) three wide outside the leading pair to the home turn, and the battled on after that effort for (2 lengths) fourth.
Three-time Group One winner Happy Trails settled in ninth place in the 11-horse field and remained there to the home turn. He went deep at the 200m and made some late ground for a sound first-up (4.2 lengths) sixth.
