Passing Shot flew the outside stall and immediately took over the pace although widest. After the field had travelled 200m jockey Lisa Allpress glanced to the rails to see if they were clear and before the dog-leg corner they had assumed the rails as well as a length lead. At the crossing, Allpress sat quietly and they cruised along comfortably leading to the 400m. At the 300m, Allpress shook up the entire and he responded by breaking clear past the 200m and the break was enough for them to hold on at the line by a half-length in a smart time of 1:08.67.

Silver Eclipse was third last before the crossing, had to wait for a split at the top of the straight then pulled to the middle of the track. She took time to wind up but really motored over the last 100m but the winner’s break was enough.

Smashing was third (rails) turning in but had no room there and had to go wider for a run. She ranged into second but was caught on the line by Silver Eclipse for a solid third.

A solidly run Listed 1200m saw the leader Passing Shot show his liking for Trentham and hold on well at the line. The 4yo has been hit and miss of late with a win then a miss then a win then a miss and continued that today when he sped over to lead early and then kept the pace fast enough to deter any challengers. He kicked away at the 400m and had the race under control at the 200m before eventually winning by half a length in 1:08.67. It was his eighth win in twenty-three starts and his second blacktype win with a G3 success last summer to go with the Listed win today. He beat the older horses poignantly in this so that has more meaning. Silver Eclipse came home with a big finish from the back for second and is close to another win. Smashing after trailing the winner to the home turn fought on well for third and gained the first blacktype placing of her career. Red Dirt Girl did the South Island proud for fourth and fought very hard after being handy the outer. Vespa was a sound fifth and beaten just over a length but the warm favourite despite being close up at the line never looked like paying a dividend the run home. His normal ping would have seen him pick up on the leaders and at least be in the top three. Adventador sat outside the leader and fought hard as usual for sixth beaten just over two lengths with the key factor being he gave the winner 5.5kg. Reilly Lincoln was not too bad while Speech Craft ran on late as did Natuzzi. Designated Driver never looked likely but will be an improver and Whosyourmaster has not come back to anywhere near his best this season so far having failed to win yet. It was a lightweights finish for the dividend payers it should be emphasized as a 4yo male beat a 5yo and 4yo mare. The first two Passing Shot and Silver Eclipse have been found out at G1 this year to put this race and context into perspective.
