Being three wide for the last half of the journey, Sensible Princess kept up a strong run in the centre of the course in a good effort here. She settled midfield from barrier seven but rider Chris Johnson got away from the fence before they reached the bend.

At the halfway mark he pushed forward and was travelling well in behind the leaders when they straightened. Balanced up, she kept on strongly yet didn't overhaul the leader until inside the 50m to win well for win six from 10 starts and maiden black-type win.

Favourite Francaletta shot to the front at the 1000m and turning in broke away by two and looked the winner but was run down very late to lose by a short head.

Coldplay was four wide at the top of the straight, went after the leader and challenged but came to the end of her run to fade slightly into third from Cote D'Or who did not get clear until the 250m but could not lift to catch the first three.

This G2 1400m at WFA for fillies and mares was run at a reasonable clip and saw a visiting Central Districts mare having her first clockwise outing prevail on the line. Sensible Princess ended up midfield and wide but with cover and turned for home sixth before being asked to get her massive frame unleashing from fourth at the 300m. The whopper 5yo mare kept coming like a big female freight train and got up on the line to win by a short head in 1:22.47. It was her sixth win in ten starts and her first attempt at blacktype, so she got the G2 and can thank the track having the prepared give and barely trimmed grass because a body as big as hers really hits the ground hard each stride. Francaletta the favourite took the lead after 500m and kicked away the run home looking the winner for all money but was a tad too close in and got nailed on the post. The curse of leaders on the day got this mare in the end but she almost beat the bias and lost no admirers. Coldplay was huge after being wide and improving up fourth and four-wide across the top before reaching second at the 400m. She was fresh up and only lost second money with 25m to go so the effort to beaten just over half a length in total was monumental after a very ugly visual ride indeed. Cote D’or was tardy but ran on well for fourth while Deals In Heels after being back and wide found the line okay too. Red Tsunami was noticed running on from second last at $85 a win so her price never reflected her ability. Ruby Armani ran home well late and can be backed with confidence next time out. The rest were fair at best and ordinary at worst with Let Her Rip the most disappointing and perhaps confirming once and for all she is a left-hander. Untamed Diamond can be forgiven after a nightmare run wide fifth then third in the open throughout. There looks winners galore out of this at most levels as female gallopers are the one consistent strength of New Zealand racing with all the benefits they get from higher stakes and incentives and weight relief plus they can run in almost every race bar the odd colts and geldings only event. The race before this a Ratings 85 1400m saw a 4yo mare win fresh up called Love Affair and she won ever so impressively with a surge only good horses possess. She ran only .10 slower than this G2 feature and she may well have been good enough to win this. Female gallopers won six of the nine race card today and provided the two most devastating winners in Love Affair (the star of the day by far) and Melt.
