Wiliamson’s decide to go in different directions.
Western Australia's breeding industry has been rocked by news that Mungrup Stud, one of the biggest in the state, will close its operation in the next three months.
A need by partners Gray and Jan Williamson to move on, in different directions, has resulted in a decision to close Mungrup Stud, leaving a lasting legacy after 40 years of service to WA racing.
From the humble beginnings of a $700 stallion and a blind broodmare, Mungrup Stud has been instrumental in producing winners of the Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) (2), Karrakatta Plate (Gr 2, 1200m) (4), Perth Magic Millions 2YO (RL, 1200m) (5) and Western Australian Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) (5).
Recent highlights include Kay Cee, who is by their stallion Playing God (Blackfriars), landing the Kingston Town Classic and Watch Me Dance - by I'm All The Talk (Stratum), who also stands at Mungrup Stud - winning the WA Sires' Produce Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Ascot during last year's carnival.
The top vendor at the 2020 Perth Magic Millions Yearling Sale, very few black type races have escaped the nursery of Mungrup Stud.
The nursery is currently home to stallions Playing God, Oratorio (Stravinsky), I'm All The Talk and A Lot (Tapit) and negotiations are currently underway to decide their futures.
"In determining the best course of action for all - family, dedicated and loyal staff, clients, business associates, general supporters, and themselves, Gray and Jan Williamson have announced today, with great sadness, that the business they have developed over 40 years will be wound up over the next three months," the stud said in a press release.
"Jan and Gray would like to extend their deepest thanks to everyone who has supported and been involved in the stud over the years. They would also like to especially thank daughters Ann and Claire and Ann's husband Tom who, with our loyal and dedicated staff, have helped make Mungrup what it is today."
A dispersal sale of all Mungrup stock will be held in the near future.
