Frankely Awesome shows Frankel’s strength as a sire.
Well-bred mare handed the stallion his 54th stakes winner
Frankely Awesome's breakthrough at stakes level in the WJ McKell Cup (Listed, 2000m) on Saturday not only provided her extraordinary sire Frankel (Galileo) with his 54th stakes winner - which was then added to again the next day when Restiany landed the Prix De Saint-Patrick (Listed, 1600m) at Saint-Cloud, but it also showcased the potency of one of the most famous families in the global stud book.
The daughter of Juddmonte Farms' all-conquering stallion Frankel, whose stallion career is just about as impressive as his racing one was, had been knocking at the door of stakes victory throughout her career, including finishing in the frame in the both the Vinery Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) so it must have been satisfying for her connections to see her finally grab some valuable black type.
Bred by Bruce Neill's Cressfield Stud on southern hemisphere time, Frankely Awesome is out of American Listed winner Street Secret (Street Cry), making her a half-sister to dual winner Secretly Awesome (Snitzel).
Street Secret herself was purchased by James Bester for US$535,000 at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale in 2013 from the Oceanic Bloodstock draft. Cressfield sold the mare for $680,000 to Paul Moroney at the 2017 Inglis Chairman's Sale.
The mare's third dam is Anzille (Plugged Nickle) who is herself a half-sister to 1993 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Urban Sea (Miswaki), who is largely regarded as one of the most influential broodmares of the last century.
Anzille and Urban Sea are out of Marystead's mare, Allegretta (Lombard). Anzille is a daughter of Plugged Nickle (Key To The Mint), who was voted American Champion Sprint Horse in 1980, while Allegretta won twice and also had a stakes placings to her name.
Urban Sea is best known as the dam of breed-shaping sire Galileo (Sadler's Wells) and multiple Group 1 and top-class sire Sea The Stars (Cape Cross).
She also produced Grade 1 winner My Typhoon (Giant's Causeway), dual elite scorer Black Sam Bellamy (Sadler's Wells), Group 3 winners Urban Ocean (Bering) and All Too Beautiful (Sadler's Wells), while her last foal was Listed winner - who was also placed second in the Irish Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) - Born To Sea (Invincible Spirit), who now stands at Haras des Faunes in France.
While, Anzille's most famous sibling is undoubtedly Urban Sea, but she is also a half-sister to King's Best (Kingmambo), who won the 2000 edition of the 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) and would subsequently go on to be a successful sire himself.
The son of Kingmambo (Mr Prospector) sired 65 stakes winners, including eight top-flight scorers headed by Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) winner and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Workforce.
Anzille also counts Group 3 winner Allez Les Trois (Riverman) as her half-sibling and she produced 2001 Prix du Jockey Club (Gr 1, 2200m) winner Anabaa Blue (Anabaa) - the sire of eight stakes winners including Grade 1 scorer Spirit One.
Allez Les Trois is also the dam of Anja (Indian Ridge), who in turn produced Rifqah (Elusive Quality) - the dam of Group 2 winner Mustajeeb (Nayef), while Allez Les Trois is also the grandam of dual Group1 winner Tamayuz (Nayef) - a Group 1-producing stallion.
The pedigree remains an active one, with Tamayuz's Listed-placed half-sister Thamarat (Anabaa) the dam of dual winner Wadyhatta (Cape Cross), who in turn produced last weekend's Irish Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) winner Santiago (Authorized).
Allez Les Trois is also the dam of Listed-placed mare Turbaine (Trempolino), who in turn produced three-time Group 3 winner Tertullian (Miswaki), who is the sire of 18 stakes winners including Doomben Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Mawingo, while the mare also produced the grandam of Group 3 winner Cayenne Pepper (Australia), who finished second to Magical (Galileo) in Sunday's Pretty Polly Stakes (Gr 1, 1m2f) at the Curragh.
