Multiple Group 1 winning son of Danehill euthanised at Emirates Park on Wednesday
Danewin (Danehill), a five-time Group 1 winner and successful sire, was euthanised at Emirates Park on Wedneday. He was 28.
Bred by Arrowfield and trained by Bob Thomsen, Danewin won the Fernhill Handicap (Listed, 1600m) at a juvenile before landing the Spring Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m), Doomben Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) and Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m) the following season seeing him at the head of the 1994-95 Australian 3YO Classification. At four he took the Mackinnon Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and Caulfield Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) as well as placing in the George Main Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) and Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m).
He stood his frist season at stud at Emirates Park in 1996 and covered mares for the next 17 years until retiring after the 2012 season. During his stud career he covered 862 mares producing 502 live foals. Overall Danewin has been responsible for 30 stakes winners headed by five Group 1 winners in Theseo, Country Tyrone, Toulouse Lautrec, Excites and Vitesse Dane. His daughters have gone on to sire 14 stakes winners to date including three-time Group 1 winner Fawkner and Gold Trail.
"Needless to say, it was a very sad day at Emirates Park yesterday as Danewin has been with most of us since we joined the Team, and in most cases was a mainstay of the stud for many years beforehand," said Bryan Carlson, general manager of Emirates Park.
"Danewin was essentially the first commercial stallion the Boss [His Excellency Nasser Lootah] installed at our Murrurundi headquarters and the numbers suggest that he would have been an exceptional stallion if afforded the same fertility so many other elite sons of Danehill enjoyed.
"Even with his issues, and thanks to the outstanding management he received once they were recognised, Danewin served Emirates Park with distinction and for that we are all truly indebted."
