Son of exported stallion and veteran broodmare Australia’s latest sprint star
Jonathan Munz would have been well within his rights to think Rekindled Applause had been given her chance to produce a star long before Giga Kick came along.
The son of Scissor Kick, who picked up $6.2 million for winning Saturday's The Everest, is the 10th foal out of Rekindled Applause, a British mare by Royal Applause out of Rekindled Affair.
Rekindled Applause had visited Encosta De Lago, Flying Spur, Exceed And Excel and had five foals by Redoute's Choice before being sent to Scissor Kick.
The best of them, before Giga Kick, were Group 2-placed Rekindled Power and Group 3-placed Shuffle Up, who are both by Redoute's Choice.
Her first foal Lago Ovation, who is by Encosta De Lago, finished second-last in a Warracknabeal maiden at her only start in a race but is the dam of Group 1 Orr Stakes winner Alabama Express.
Munz, through his GSA Bloodstock operation, was one of the biggest supporters of Scissor Kick, a dual Group 3-winning son of Redoute's Choice who also finished second to Hallowed Crown in the 2014 Golden Rose, during his four-year stint at stud in Australia.
Rekindled Applause, who is a half-sister to dual Group 2 winner and Cox Plate placegetter Rekindled Interest (Redoute's Choice), first visited Scissor Kick in 2016, after failing to get in-foal to Redoute's Choice, but she missed again.
She returned to Scissor Kick the following year, producing Miss Gaga – who has had one start for a seven-length sixth placing in a 900m Murray Bridge maiden – before having Giga Kick on October 19 in 2019, at the age of 18.
Giga Kick gave indication he was above average in February when he won a Sale maiden by 4-1/4 lengths before returning two weeks before the end of the 2021/22 season to win a two-year-old handicap over 1000m.
He then joined Listed Silk Stocking winner Dzsenifer as Scissor Kick's only Stakes winner with his win in the Group 3 Vain Stakes (1100m) at his first start as a three-year-old.
His narrow win in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1200m) secured his start in The Everest before beating Australia's best sprinters in Saturday's $15 million event at Randwick.
Rekindled Applause was sent to Showtime after having Giga Kick, but failed to get in-foal before visiting Pariah and producing a colt last spring.
Scissor Kick is no longer part of the Arrowfield roster, not returning from France, where he had shuttled while standing in Australia, in 2020 and has since been sold to a North African horse breeder.
