Local filly justifies buyers’ belief in rich 2YO race.
Tony Gollan is not the first Magic Millions prospector to declare at a Gold Coast Yearling Sale that they have found the horse to come back and win the following year's 2YO Classic.
There were no shortage of buyers who said precisely that at last week's 2023 offering.
But Gollan was the one from last year's sale that was proven correct on Thursday when Skirt The Law won the $2.5 million event that was deferred five days after last Saturday's abandonment.
It made his decision to part with $170,000 for the daughter of Better Than Ready in partnership with John Foote and Black Soil Bloodstock a smart one.
"John Foote and the team, they bought her at the sales and I know we all say when we buy them that we're going to get back here next year, but we identified her early as being early and all she's done is improve," Gollan said.
"I'm very fortunate to have a good team that buys good horses and a very fortunate trainer I am.
"To train a filly like her is awfully exciting."
Skirt The Law's record now sits at three wins from as many starts with the Magic Millions 2YO Classic her first start since a 5-1/4-length win at Doomben on December 3.
Her only other start realised a 2-3/4-length debut win, also at Doomben, on November 12.
The Lyndhurst Stud-sold youngster is now one of the most valuable two-year-old fillies in the country, with the fact she is a Magic Millions winner only part of her appeal.
She is from the Exceed And Excel mare Outlaw Kate, who is out of She's Got Gears (Invincible Spirit), which makes her a half-sister to Group 1 William Reid Stakes winner Masked Crusader (Toronado), who was a narrow runner-up to Nature Strip in the 2021 The Everest.
No matter what happens post her racing career, Skirt The Law has already more than paid her way with the $1.16m winner's cheque not her only collect on Thursday.
As the first home of the three horses eligible for the Racing Women's Bonus, she also collected an extra $333,334 in bonuses as part of that scheme.
