3 minute read

Racing and Sports highlight our standout plays at Australian TAB meetings for January 1.

Australian thoroughbred TAB meetings are today held at Inverell, Canterbury, Flemington, Mornington, Sunshine Coast, Murray Bridge and Ascot.

INVERELL: RACE 8 @ 5:45 PM

CHOICE WITNESS (9) turned in a strong fresh effort at Armidale before getting too far back at Scone most recently behind a smart one. Now third-up into the campaign and into a suitable race, she looks beautifully placed to return to winning ways. PURPLE ESPRIT (12) got the job done by 1.6L at Armidale last time out and she looks a nice horse on the way up. The form out of that race has worked out well and the sticky draw isn't too much of a worry. Still an improving galloper who creates plenty of interest in this event. POWER BEAU (1) is looking for the hat-trick after a dominant win last start at Armidale over 1300m. He is likely to be back in the running today, but it's hard to ignore his latest effort and he's sure to be storming home at the finish. EIGHTY EIGHT STARS (4) was too good at Gunnedah recently and rates well off that effort. ROMAN REBEL (2) is unbeaten first-up but hasn't raced for 380 days. Nice trial coming in though has him right in the finish if he's on song.
SELECTIONS: Backing Choice Witness in the last.

CANTERBURY: RACE 8 @ 7:00 PM

UNLEESHING (11) has the hoof on the till following seconds in both runs since a spell. Chased well over 1200m at Rosehill last time, getting within 1.2L of the winner. Won the only time she attempted this distance. Can deliver today. MANUSCRIPT (7) went forward and gave a great sight before finishing third last time out over 1200m at this track. Can cross from an awkward gate and could prove tough to get past. RECRUITER (4) stuck on well last start to finish second over 1200m at Goulburn. Won his maiden two back at Hawkesbury, the only time he has attempted this distance. Go well from the inside stall. OPAL FIELDS (1) is building a handy record at this journey having delivered as favourite last time out at Hawkesbury. Can feature in the finish again.
SELECTIONS: Unleeshing to deliver third up.

FLEMINGTON: RACE 2 @ 1:45 PM

DREAM ALL DAY (6) looks ideally placed rising to 1600m having been heavily supported at Ballarat last time and just levelling out late when third. The fresh win from last was outstanding and a mile at Flemington looks a very good recipe for her. ENXUTO (3) resumed with an encouraging run at Geelong when third, beaten 1.3 lengths. He's a consistent type who draws softly and can challenge. WASCALY (2) struggled in a much stronger race last time here when eighth to subsequent G1 winner Light Infantry Man. His form prior reads well and a drop in trip off a freshen should be okay. THE NEGOTIATOR (4) was poor at Seymour last time but has claims on previous form.
SELECTIONS: Keen on Dream All Day.

MORNINGTON: RACE 5 @ 3:16 PM

Good race but keen on the locally trained CORRUPTED (2). Won when last resuming and has a big finish. On home track and will take holding out. MISS TORONADO (7) was good fresh in tougher then placed latest. Building to a win and wouldn't have to improve much to feature again. CROATIAN ART (3) was a maiden winner fresh then not far away at big odds at Caulfield Heath latest. This more suitable and can do much better. MACHINEGUNRHON (6) finished just behind Croatian Art in the same race at Caulfield when trying to lead throughout and can give a big sight here.
SELECTIONS: Keen on Corrupted fresh.

SUNSHINE COAST: RACE 5 @ 3:52 PM

AUTORA (9) won a city maiden over this journey three back and was an eye catcher last start at Ipswich, settling at the tail before running on to miss by a nose. Maloney goes aboard. Big chance to go one better. SCRIBBLE (5) led and fought well to miss by just a head here last start. Draws wider but that last run should have brought him to peak fitness. EIGHT CYLINDERS (2) took a while to win his maiden but achieved it in good style last start, leading throughout to score by 0.8 lengths at this track and trip. Rates as one of the chief contenders. Must respect. Last-start maiden winner MR O'REILLY (8) is lightly raced with upside so could take the next step.
SELECTIONS: Autora to win after catching the eye last start.

MURRAY BRIDGE: RACE 6 @ 4:42 PM

ROYAL TRAPEZE (1) dropped in company and got the job done by a short-head at Strathalbyn 5 days ago when charging home from well back in the field. He won't find this much harder and while in this sort of mood, he can repeat the dose. DERBY DOWNS (2) failed to fire over 1500m in a tougher grade at Gawler last time out. He might be better off being kept to the sprint trips and with a couple of subtle gear changes, he can bounce straight back into the money. EXALTED KATE (8) has been mixing her form this prep and has the blinkers off for the first time. Rochelle Milnes replaces an apprentice and she can figure in the top 3 this time. OUR DIVINYL (7) is a likely improver second up.
SELECTIONS: Royal Trapeze to win.

ASCOT: RACE 2 @ 4:11 PM

ANTIQUE QUEEN (8) resumed in top order with a good win at Albany when running over the top to score. She'll be better for that effort and while this is harder, she's expected to have come on from the fresh run. Has plenty of talent and should take plenty of beating. MADAME MAGIC (1) had been around the mark before a disappointing run last start over 1400m here. That form has worked out well and she steps out to the mile for the first time today. The booking of Lane is a big push for her chances and she can bounce back to form. STARATING (3) ran over the top to score in a CL3 at Bunbury last time out and maps to be a little closer this time around. Fitter now and can make her presence felt. MY JIMMY (2) has been a little disappointing this time in but now third-up and up to the mile. Hoping to see sharp improvement from him. LIEN HYPHEN (7) is better than he showed last time out and can bounce back dropping in trip.
SELECTIONS: Keen on Antique Queen.
