Suavito began well and then eased to settle in eighth place, between runners. She remained there to the home turn, got a split going to fifth at the 200m and then responded to Damien Oliver’s urgings to score in the few strides.

Girl In Flight settled nicely in seventh place on the rails. She switched across heels at the 400m, challenged shortly afterwards, hit the lead passing the 50m only to be caught right the post for second.

Amanpour soon crossed to the lead and then set quite a good pace (first 1400m 1:25.79). She grabbed a break at the 400m and then fought on particularly well for a close-up third.

Tango’s Daughter raced behind the leader and held on for (1.6 lengths) fourth while Solicit was also handy all the way, racing in fourth place to the turn and then battled on to hold that position to the post, beaten two and a half lengths.

The favourite Scratchy Bottom settled well back in the field in 12th place on the rails, remained there to the home turn. But she took quite a while to wind-up in the straight before making late ground for (3.4 lengths) sixth, looking suited to further.
