Gaultier wins 2015 Aib Group Ins. Levin Classic Group 1 NZ$ 240,000 at Trentham (NZ) 3yo, 1600m.
Gaultier, a maiden until yesterday, was a surprise winner but he put up a good effort nevertheless. He was ridden patiently by Michael Coleman and settled in last place in the nine-horse field. He moved up under riding approaching the home turn, went to the centre of the track at the 300m and put in a strong run to hit the lead in the closing stages for a narrow but smart win.
Sardaaj led early, then eased and settled in sixth place, one off the rails before improving (three wide), under riding nearing the home turn. She kept responding to challenge at the 150m and fought gamely for a close second.
Huka Eagle enjoyed an ideal trip in third place on the rails and then moved up nicely on turning for home. He challenged at the 200m and kept fighting on for a close-up third after seeming to have every chance.
Prince Mambo soon took the lead and then slowed the tempo. He was still clear at the 200m and then held on quite well for a sound (1.4 lengths) fourth.
