Werther was able to work into perfect position midrace, wide with cover in midfield, bided his time tracking up a wall off horses from the 600m and after pushing clear at the 300m he unleashed a powerful gallop in the slow going to win well. Content to race wide in midfield throughout,

Exquisite Jewel stayed on strongly to just hold second ahead of Vive La Difference who circled from last at the 600m and sustained a big run wide on the track for third.

Championship Stakes (G2)

This strangely situated on the calendar G2 middle distance races for 3yo gallopers saw just a modest line up attracted. It looks more like a stepping-stone for any 3yo that is not top class but may be looking at Adelaide or Queensland late in the season. The 2100m was run in 2:18.31 and that is a very ordinary time whatever way you look at it. Werther proved too strong in the wet conditions and being out of a Zabeel dam his stamina was there for all to see plus his sire Tavistock is leaving swimmers in numbers. Exquisite Jewel was brave for second as she never got on the track and the filly has shown her stamina hand late in the season for sure. This pair had formed the quinella in their previous start at G3 over 2000m but the finishing order was reverse today. Vive La Difference ran on well down the outside to give the fillies the placegetter positions. Lucoblu was sound for fourth and he has some scope while Redeem Code battled away after racing handy throughout. Some big margins started to come after that as many either could not swim or have had enough racing for the season. Kolonel Kev is a forgive and the filly Stars In Align suffered a tendon injury. Werther was winning his third race from ten starts and is likely to head to Adelaide for the Derby and as long as the footing is dead or worse he will loom large.
