Sound Proposition was wide early as a result of his barrier 12 and settled back of midfield with 1200m to run. Still wide at the 700m, rider Michael Coleman moved the Savabeel four-yearold closer to be in behind a bunched pack but when the field turned in they were forced to go very wide. At the 300m there were ten across the track and all were chances. Sound Proposition did not look like one of them but the further they went the stronger he ran and he flashed at them in the final 25 metres to win by a head, with several in line for the minors.

Trojan Warrior was forward of midfield (one off the fence) passing the 700m then pulled out into the centre of the track to make his run. Along with many, he looked likely at the 200m and held a slender lead just short of the line but lost in the last stride.

Rasa Lila was well back just before straightening and looked to have no chance at the 300m then weaved through and rushed at them over the last 50m to grab a very late third.

Manco Easter Stakes (G1)

Type: OPEN

It was a fast run G1 Easter Handicap mile at set weights and penalties and saw the winner Sound Proposition, a 4yo with scope, get in off the ballot and win. Sound Proposition was just a three-win galloper before this and held his local rating of 86 despite being disqualified from a 2015 G1 NZ Derby third for having a colossal cobalt reading of 541 (200 is the limit so nearly two and a half times over). If this gelding was returned to his actual local rating after an inevitable disqualification (that took almost a year to be resolved) then he would have got nowhere near a start and would not be in the field. Sound Proposition was wide then in the midfield before coming up wider turning for home and maintained a sustained surge to get up the final 10m to clock a slick 1:33.29. It was his fourth win from eleven starts for the Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott training partnership that also had two others runners disqualified for high cobalt readings in that late summer and early autumn of 2015. Trojan Warrior almost caused a boilover and was one of the least race winning runners in the field being a four-win galloper at the start. Charmont (2 wins) and Late Decision (3 wins) joined Sound Proposition and Trojan Warrior as the least saluting quartet in the field. Trojan Warrior from midfield loomed wide to win after hitting the front at the 100m only to be caught the final 10m. Rasa Lila came with a thunderous surge for third from miles back and being up the middle lacking clear air at the 200m likely cost her the win. Sakhee’s Solder was huge for fourth under 58kg beaten just over half a length after being well back and wide then being the deepest runner turning in. He is a decent draw away from winning this preparation and would be an ideal type for the Queensland winter carnival. Mabeel the favourite gassed his chances and those of the second favourite Snapshot by drag racing for an extended period. After being wide early Mabeel was sent up outside the leader after 400m not to sit there but keep it honest and no wonder they ran the time they did. He was beaten just over a length after leading at the 200m so ran a good race. Watch This Space after trailing fought well and has really improved this year. Julinsky Prince was urged to stay handy and boxed on as he can for seventh beaten two lengths under 59kg. Charmont for a two-win mare fought on well from a handy spot and she too could thrive on a Queensland winter campaign. Abidewithme seemed to dip soon after the start and settled in the rear duo but was noticed running home very stoutly the closing stages indeed. Blizzard ran an honest race after being wide across the top to the home turn while Soubrettes was noticed running on from the rear duo. Late Decision did okay from the back while Snapshot could not handle the heat being applied in front and melted the run home. The gap from first to last at the line was less than seven lengths so nothing was disgraced and this is always a super future source of winners. The 2016 Easter looks a strong race and future form guide as so much talent competed and of course the quinella was 4yo gallopers with it all ahead.
