A fairly even start saw Abidewithme jump with them but soon drift back to be last when they settled. There was no change between the 1000m and 800m marks and rider Michael McNab waited patiently. McNab pushed the mare forward and wide approaching the last corner and when they straightened they were widest yet still last. She took time to get into her work but into the final 200m they were eating up the ground and travelling best, taking over in the last 50 metres to score in an exciting finish.

El Pescado was second last early, moved off the fence at the 600m, pushed out wider near the turn in and accelerated to take the lead at the 250m but was not able to hold out the winner close to the line.

Julinsky Prince was midfield (one out) passing the 600m, was pocketed once into the straight and had to switch back to the inner to make his run, a good effort but out-finished by the first two.

Tauranga Stakes (G2)

Type: OPEN

The G2 mile under WFA was held on an off and dodgy Tauranga track with the times all day below standard. Abidewithme won the feature by half a length in 1:38.62 after settling down last in the eight-horse field. The 7yo mare surged down the outer widest and was winning her first race since August of 2015. The victory was her ninth in thirty-three starts and her second success at G2 to go with two Listed wins as well. She has been placed twice at G1 and once at G2 and twice at G3 so has always been up to the top grade in New Zealand. Worryingly the maiden mile to open the card ran a faster time than this G2 feature so even allowing for first use of the track the gap between non-winners and these should be immense. El Pescado sat back too and surged to look the winner at the 150m only to be overtaken the final 50m by a stronger finish but in hindsight may have been detonated a tad too soon. Julinsky Prince ran his usual honest race for third while the leader Amarula was okay for fourth at his first race against the older horses under WFA so the 4yo showed he can measure up eventually. Antonio Lombardo was an honest fifth and Celebrity Miss after a wide trip throughout plugged on again when looking flat and weakening turning for home. Mime was poor and had a health excuse while Sound Proposition was ordinary too but raced far too close for his normal racing pattern so can be forgiven at WFA. All in all not a strong G2 field and when the maidens go quicker on the day you know the track was off and this race was run strangely to say the least.
