From the outside barrier in the eight horse field, rider Tommy Berry bounced The Monstar out to lead early, although wide. Berry kept him going and passing the 800m they pushed out by almost a length yet one off the fence. Into the straight, Berry cuddled him up but at the 300m shook the reins and then added a couple of slaps at the 200m. After that they held off the challenges the six-year-old had three quarters of a length to spare at the post.

Sirbible held the rails around the bend on The Monstar's inner, stayed down on the fence the entire length of the straight and never gave up, gaining some ground late on the winner for a good second.

His Majesty had a nice run behind the pace to the last corner, moved out for a clear run one off the fence and looked a danger but was outgunned over the last 100m.
