La Nouvelle Vague was among the last three past the post the first time around but in a game move, apprentice rider Leah Hemi shot the six-year-old four wide around the field and raced smartly up to take over the running as they started down the back straight. Hemi kept the pressure on and the field was spread out over 15 lengths passing the 600m and into the home straight they were clear by three lengths, the daring tactic proving too much for the chasers and they outstayed them, still clear by three lengths at the post.

Saint Kitt was midfield to the turn, took some time to gather and finished strongly, however the winner was too far in front.

Princess Brook was three wide, ready to challenge turning in and battled away the best of the rest for third, while Revelator stayed nearer the rail and also battled away, not far from the second and third finishers in fourth.

This Listed 2400m Open Handicap saw a three-win 6yo racing many grades above his class win very easily and embarrass the so-called stayers in the South Island. La Nouvelle Vague needs cut in the ground or wet footing and had not won a race prior to today since a 2600m win in Ratings75 for jumpers in April of 2600m over some very ordinary types. He has only ever won when put in the lead or on the pace so can go at one speed for longer than most it seems if on the right sort of footing. He was back and wide today but sent around to take the front a mile from home and never looked like stopping to score by a humiliating three and a quarter lengths in 2:35.32. It was his fourth win from nineteen starts and this late maturer will surely make a super jumper one day as he keeps rolling along and takes out any fight from his rivals. At his first blacktype attempt he has demolished a field and that says a lot more about them than him for sure. Saint Kitt under 58kg ran a game race and kept coming the run home after being wide for almost half the race and then sitting sixth the outer. Princess Brook trailed the winning leader and fought on okay but had every possible chance. Revelator under 60kg fought on okay from worse than midfield on settling while The Gordonian battled from fifth the inner on settling. Motorbike Mike the 8yo ran on fairly but really the runners at this stage were coming in at intervals. The lack of stamina depth in the South Island makes this a dubious result indeed. The way La Nouvelle Vague beat these when rising many grades shows that the South Island stayer is now a myth so he has everything covered on the Mainland at this moment it would seem.
