2017 Coca-Cola Canterbury Gold Cup Group 3 April 22 - Riccarton Park

3 minute read

Tommy Tucker wins 2017 Coca-Cola Canterbury Gold Cup Group 3 NZ$100,000 at Riccarton Park (NZ), 2000m.

Tommy Tucker was shuffled back soon after the jump and he and rider Jacob Lowry found themselves second to last down the back straight. The field packed up near the 800m but Tommy Tucker was still back then ran up to be handy yet wide near the last corner. Travelling well, he took over upon straightening and out in the middle of the track put a length break on them then held on solidly to the line by a half length for win 14.

Bloodstream was last at the 800m, tracked the winner into the straight and kept up a good run to the line without looking like overhauling the winner.

Benzini was a handy fifth turning in, switched to the inside and ran on but was a distant third from Saint Kitt, who led into straight, was headed at the 400m and battled away for fourth. The first two were well clear.

Coca-Cola Canterbury Gold Cup (G3)

Type: OPEN

The rising 9yo Tommy Tucker won this G3 2000m at WFA and has been in career best form this year. It does not say much for the opposition that this 8yo has won four of eight starts this season and they have been an Open Handicap 1400m under 60kg in November then a Listed mile under 60kg in December then a Listed mile under 60kg in April before today a G3 2000m under 59kg at WFA. Tommy Tudor settled down second last and then improved wide with cover across the top before striding into the lead with 400m to go. He won by half a length in 2:09.07 and captured his fifteenth win in forty-six starts so has a decent strike rate. Bloodstream ran home strongly from last for second and was badly in under WFA for a five-win galloper as he carried the same as the winner that has won three times as many more races. Benzini was disappointing for third but may have been ridden too handy in third plus the tricky wet ground stymied his surge. The rising 8yo likes better footing these days in his older age and has become a tad cunning it seems because prior to today he was beaten nose at G1 under WFA. He has not won a race since June last year. Saint Kitt was wide then led clearly and wilted to fourth beaten five lengths while Sureasyouwereborn sat second and wilted the same to be a nose behind at the line. Miss Three Stars had a wide trip fifth or sixth without cover and the effort told the run home. Sampson was poor and never copped the footing or WFA as prior he had easily won at G2 under set weights and penalties. Gallant Boy and Revelator stopped and are not WFA types with the rising 7yo and 9yo handicappers only. This was an old field in the main and the youngest runner and least experienced performer finished second in the 5yo gelding Bloodstream. The footing affected many as did the WFA scale but whether this was a legitimate reflection of the ability of some of these is very doubtful. The nine runners were made up of two 8yos, four 7yos, two 6yos and a 5yo.
