Set specifically for this in order to earn black-type, Grazia cleared out in the straight to win quite easily. She was a shade slow away (barrier eight) but rider Sam Weatherly pushed forward and they sat third, one off the rail down the back.

They moved out past the crossing and coled turning in. Weatherly gave the mare a shake into the straight and they bounded clear, adding more pressure past the 200m and then cruised to the line an easy winner.

Aspen Lass struck traffic from the 500m and didn't get clear until the race was over, finishing well but with no chance of catching the winner.

Princess Brook also got clear a little late and ran on well for a distant third from Five Kings, who finished best of the rest for fourth.

C'church Casino Spring Classic (LR)

WT: 53kg Type: OPEN

This Listed 2000m even for Open Class under Handicap conditions saw another North Islands prepared runner bolt in today and they really are so far superior to the South Island depth it is not funny. Grazia, a 5yo mare, was having her first attempt at Blacktype and after sitting handy the outer moved up and led turning for home before powering clear to win by three and a half lengths and clock 2:02.57. It was her fourth win in seventeen starts so she was up three grades supposedly and demolished this field. Aspen Lass ran home strongly to be the runner up and this also 5yo mare was second up rising 400m so has improvement to come Princess Brook made it an all female trifecta and after setting back came through and reached second at the 200m before being overtaken into third the last 10m. In fairness she carried 7kg more than the first two across the line. Five Kings was a distant fifth and Night Nurse plugged on with both having their chance. The on pacer trio all stopped to finish last, second last and seventh. No depth to this field and the Open Class ranks are almost never ever deep in the South Island. Grazia can keep winning in the South Island and over a range of distances. Aspen Lass is a winner in waiting while Princess Brook has been placed in her last four starts and a win is surely close at hand.
