Honest Enzo's Lad took his record to four wins in 18 starts, scoring easily here. He settled midfield from barrier two with jockey Chris Johnson easing him away from the fence at the crossing.

In traffic at the 400m Johnson waited then room opened up three out and they drove through to challenge. Enzo's Lad was cruising and had the field covered inside the 100m to win with plenty in hand by one and a quarter lengths.

Don Carlo was midfield and widest at the crossing, tried to get on terms with the leaders at the 300m, led briefly soon after but could not hold the winner.

Signify was also wide at the top of the straight, kept up a solid run to the line but was unable to reach the first two from Morse Code, who led at the 300m then held on fairly for fourth.

The Listed 1000m Open Handicap drew a field lacking any serious depth as outside a handful the rest were not and never have been of this grade. Enzo’s Lad, an Australian bred 5yo gelding, surged home from sixth the inside and once off and through powered between runners to lead 100m out. He went on to win by a length and a quarter in 56.28, which sounds slick but it is not really as the times down the Riccarton chute are bionic and should always be taken with a boulder of salt. The track record for 1000m here is 54.20 to give an idea of how fast they run 800m to 1200m races here. Enzo’s Lad was second up and only a three-win galloper before today so was nowhere near a true Open Handicapper but achieved his first piece of blacktype having failed at this level when a 3yo. Don Carlo was game second after being back and very wide then sweeping up to lead at the 300m and the 4yo has come up well this season. Signify, the only serious sprinter in the field and carrying clear topweight of 60kg ran on gamely for third after being back and wide to the home turn. Morse Code trailed on the inner and led momentarily at the 400m before being headed and wilted a tad to fourth. Kinagat ran on well and was luckless after being seventh wide then ending up last turning for home only to find the line attractively. Mr Typhon his stablemate also ran on okay after being midfield and then held up turning for home while Caramac was not too bad from well back to the 400m. The rest were either outclassed or outpaced or both. Very dubious strength field and if not for Signify in the field it wasn’t of a Listed level as the vast majority of them were not Open Class or anywhere near it. Several of these will back up here on Wednesday at G3 in a stronger line up.
