Last start maiden winner Spring Heat impressed greatly, running away with a quality win against a quality field for her first of perhaps many black-type wins. She drew an awkward barrier one, beginning well but drifted back to be sixth (of eight) at the 900m.

Approaching the last corner rider Jake Bayliss moved her out but when they straightened pulled hard on the left rein and accelerated quickly, ran up to the leaders in a few strides then put them away impressively and with plenty in hand at the post.

Xbox had little luck. Last at the 600m, he stayed close to fence turning in but did not find racing room until late, having to wait for the winner to race past before rattling home late for a nice second.

The Great Southern co-led turning in, briefly took over at the 250m but was swamped by the first two yet held on well from Prom Queen, who also co-led and fought on well for fourth.

This G3 3yo 1400m had just eight starters and several in the field had doubts about either being over the top, not dry trackers or directionally dubious. In the end a last start maiden winning filly in Spring Heat humiliated these and stole the entire show all day at Ellerslie. The Australian bred filly has a long languid stride and can really detonate dynamically, which was for all to see on display today. She got back on the inner early and then was worked off the inside before the home turn and angled second widest aggressively. When her rider asked the filly to go the response was devastating and he went from sixth at the 250m to leading 100m later then blew them away at the line to score by two and a half lengths in 1:23.82. The way she won and the ease of the win matters most then there is the time that was faster than the Ratings85 containing some decent older horses by a length and a half, which augurs well for this untapped filly. One whip strike behind the saddle at the 200m produced a windburn-causing response and her rider Jake Bayliss was posing for the photo well before the line, so his suspension and fine encountered out of the race will give him ample time to apply some scalding cream and heal. Xbox ran on strongly from last for second after being awkwardly away. The two runners that matched motors throughout in The Great Southern and Prom Queen finished third and fourth in that order with almost a length between the pair. Prom Queen was a warm favourite and got beaten fair and square again with rival riders clearly now knowing she can be softened up early and be very brittle the closing stages. She was reported to have a slow recovery after the race and having been well beaten at G1 in the South Island three weeks ago over a mile when odds on she may have had enough for the time being. Hard Merchandize was fair at best and there is a doubt on him clockwise plus on top of the ground. Florence Jean was disappointing but when she is fully fit and sound you can expect a better performance plus she is a lead or sit outside the pace type and taking a sit early spoke volumes plus there was not the usual strong backing for the filly. O’Hara was ordinary and Maktoum can be forgiven as he got run very wide the home turn by the winner that was bolting and ready to explode. The 3yo form for both sexes in New Zealand has been very suspect so far plus bubbles are bursting by the day and week now. This filly Spring Heat however could be special indeed as when she warms up all her rivals want to get out of the kitchen pronto. Her dam suggest all sprinters on that side of the family but being by the super filly sire More Than ready she will run a mile and middle distance this season at least. Spring Heat is hitting top of the tree temperatures early into Summer with it all ahead and a likely blacktype award gathering Autumn. She is as of right now the best filly in New Zealand for scope/upside and her clash with the proven G1 mile winner last month Hasahalo over Summer could well determine what dame gets the all the fame for this season. This field was not strong for differing reasons with Prom Queen nowhere near her best now and Hard Merchandize (G2 winner in Spring on an off rain-affected track) not a dry tracker or true clockwise type it seems The form of both and throw in Florence Jean plus Xbox too makes the 3yo results involving this quartet very suspect indeed and if not wet track form then it is deadest suspect. Spring Heat demolished these, so the 3yo pecking order for the first five months of this season can be thrown out and dismissed now and a new more trustable list started afresh as wet track form in the Spring is irrelevant and misleading.
