Daytona Red romped away by two and three quarter lengths in a good staying effort, giving the field a sizeable start soon after the start. He dawdled from the stalls and was a clear last at the 1600m.Jockey Matt Cameron woke him up at the 1200m but they were three wide around the big Trentham bend and entered the straight widest but one.

He ranged up to the leaders five wide at the 350m then strolled clear to win easily, the chasers having no excuses, for his third win in ten starts.

Favourite Felaar tracked the winner from the 800m, kept up a solid run wide out to the line but was never going to catch him.

Bizzwinkle turned in three wide, co led briefly but was outfinished from Kamanda Lincoln who did best of the rest along the

The Listed St Leger over 2500m saw a dominant win to a strapping 4yo gelding called Daytona Red that races in the same colours as the late great Bonecrusher (18 wins including nine at G1). Daytona Red settled down last then improved wide across the top and he gobbled them up early in the run home to lead at the 300m. The big chestnut bounded away to score by almost three lengths and clocked 2:36.55 for a superior stamina effort. It was his third win in ten starts and first at blacktype plus the late maturer in his first three starts beat one home, beat two home and beat one home, so could not get warm over the short trips. The odds on favourite Felaar settled in the rear trio and swept up wide to be sixth turning in before unleashing but could not go with the winner. He maintained a sound finish to be third at the 200m and got to second at the 50m but the winner had him covered by such a margin it is hard to envisage the tables ever being turned as both will improve and Daytona Red has a slicker turn of foot. Bizzwinkle led then settled second before being fourth across the top then strode up third turning for home and reached second at the 300m. He fought on okay and was a clear third at the line with gap back to a running on late from the rear trio on settling in Kamanda Lincoln. Anarchy ran on well for fifth after being back and surrounded on settling then Princess El Jay fought on okay after getting back on the inner. Korakonui was wide and worked up second outer and led early the run home before being headed and weakening to seventh beaten six lengths. Major Tom and Narvick raced handy the outer and inner respectively but did not go on with it while Gorbachev stopped after sitting midfield the inner. Leading Role was poor and he may have been exhausted having raced since early September 2017 and today was his thirteenth start without any break. Commanding Prince stopped to finish a distant last after leading at the 1800m until the 400m and was his worst effort in quite a while. The field was not overly strong but the winner while no 'Big Red' as in Bonecrusher was nicknamed, he is Daytona Red and he will be a Cups force in New Zealand next season as this is an area of many where the depth is non-existent anymore. Felaar was the second best horse in the field on the day and this pair should meet again in Cups races next season or if the depth is still poor then maybe WFA too.
