The Chris Waller-trained Dystopia earned a valuable black type victory with a win in the $100,000 Listed Geoff and Beryl White Triscay Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on Saturday.
A sister of Golden Slipper winner Stratum, Dystopia had been racing well in weaker grade for a while but had always shown ability and Waller's efforts finally paid off with a bob-of-the-head win.
Ridden by Glyn Schofield, Dystopia jumped well from the barriers and crossed a couple of runners to settle in third spot on the fence behind race leader Rosie's Reward (Adams).
The tempo was solid which explains why as the field rounded the turn Rosie's Reward was the first to go, leaving Dystopia with little option but to go for home earlier than anticipated.
Tempo also meant that runners would be finishing off from the rear of the field and so it was, Dystopia left in front too soon and Alberton Park (Brown) and Ofcourseican (Bowman) finishing hard.
Stride by stride the back markers pulled ground off Dystopia. At the 200m the leader had three and five lengths respectively on the other two. At the 100m it was two and four lengths. At the 50m it was one and one and a half and on the line it was a half head and a head. Dystopia held on, just.
Alberton Park and Ofcourseican finished second and third respectively. The overall time was 1.10.26 with the last 600m run in 34.72. Dystopia paid $4.10 with NSWTAB.
“It was a bit heartbreaking, those concluding stages, but all credit to Glyn he bounced her out, was positive and was closer than I thought she would be,” Waller said.
“She was left in front a long way from home, he nursed her for a little bit then pinched a break and was chased by too good mares so I think the run was good.
“She has been a model of consistency, we have purposely just held her back and try to run her in what we thought were the best races and I think that helps get confidence in her and it has been justified today.
“I think in four weeks time there is another listed fillies and mares race and we will be ready for it.”
“Chris probably didn't want me as forward as I was but I had to clear some slower ones on my inside early and I found myself right behind the speed,” Schofield said.
“If anything, she hit the front way too early, I thought Rosie's Reward would pull me through until the 200m but when we came into the straight I was all over the back of her.
“When I elected to go I thought I had better go and pinch a margin because I knew Ofcourseican and Alberton Park would be coming but she held them off.”
Dystopia is by Redoute's Choice out of the Bourgeois and is owned by Ingham Racing Syndicate (Mgr: R W Ingham) and has racked up prizemoney totalling $325,230.
