Atomic Force Returns To Work

3 minute read

Dual Group 1 winner Atomic Force has this week commenced slow work in preparation for an early spring campaign after a minor leg complaint ruled him out of the Sydney Autumn carnival.

Atomic Force returned to Darren Smith's Newcastle stable this week where he began slow work four months after a successful raid of New Zealand and subsequent spell.

“He had a little bit of a hiccup when he came back from New Zealand with his near fore,” Smith said.

“Dean [Watt] and the Dynamic Team didn't want to take any risks with him so we gave him a good break and he has resumed work this week.”

“The horse looks really well and probably needed the break. He hadn't seen a rest for a good 12 months prior to his New Zealand trip so it didn't hurt him at all.”

The latest campaign of Atomic Force culminated with a Group 1 Railway Stakes win followed by a narrow second in the Telegraph Handicap at Trentham behind Guiseppina.

Smith suggested Atomic Force defending his Railway Stakes crown in 2013 wasn't out of the question with connections potentially plotting a similar campaign to the one their six-year-old embarked on this season.

“I think we are mainly looking at the same sort of program we did last year with him in the early spring and we might even be able to go back to New Zealand,” Smith told Sky Sports Radio.

The Darren Smith stable will saddle up two runners during the Scone Cup Carnival.

Debut winner Muzzle Blast will resume in the $50,000 Patinack Farm Class 1 Handicap (1100m) on the Friday while the lightly raced Welkom Gold will return from a lengthy spell in the Listed Prydes Easifeed Quality Handicap (1100m) the following day.

The only two Australian bred runners in the field finished first and second. Atomic Force is the second winner of the race in three years to be trained in Australia and the third since 2005, with A Gold Trail in 2010 and Recurring in 2005. There was a fourth across the line first with Dantelah in 1999 but it was very controversially relegated. Dantelah was trained at Broadmeadow by Paul Perry and Atomic Force is also prepared at the same Newcastle race track. Atomic Force and A Gold Trail were both considered 1100m sprinters but ran out the 1200m against lesser opposition okay. It was the second G1 win for Atomic Force after his success last autumn in the G1 Galaxy (1100m), also on a testing wet track. Atomic Force started of with Chris Waller then went to John Hawkes then Team Hawkes (John with sons Michael and Wayne) followed by Kevin Moses before Darren Smith got him. He has won nine of his eleven races for Smith. The time of 1:11.57 was only just over a second (6 lengths) quicker than the impressive G3 juvenile winner on the day Warhorse, which makes him look a serious youngster indeed. The depth of the 2012 Railway field is very dubious for what was a once great New Zealand sprint race with barely anything having G1 form versus all comers at all. The track at Ellerslie when rain-affected has become treacherous for many years now and most horses do not go a yard in it such is the holding nature and in particular across the top, which is a real problem area. Inside lanes certain defeat zones today and the winners got wider as the day progressed.
