Super Easy Scores Amazing Guineas Win

3 minute read

Leading Singapore jockey Joao Moreira produced a magical ride to get Super Easy up in the S$500,000, Singapore Group 1 Singapore Guineas (1600m) at Kranji on Friday to retain a perfect record of 10 wins from as many starts.

Trainer Michael Freedman has such a high opinion of the Darci Brahma colt that he is considering taking Super Easy to Melbourne for the 2012 Victorian Spring Racing Carnival.

Super Easy and Moreira did not break cleanly from barrier one and quickly found themselves shuffled back in the field as Jeram Glory and Danny Beasley and Totality and KB Soo took the field through to the bend.

Super Easy and Moreira were seventh with 1000m to run and as the field straightened for the long run home they faced a wall of horses. Moreira went inside for clear racing room but the gap closed with 400m to run.

He sharply turned Super Easy to the outside and set off again. Up front Cash Luck (AUS) Stephen Baster had taken over the lead and were heading had to for the line. Super Easy was still 4L away with 200m to run.

Moreira had to turn again, this time to the inside as once again his running room was blocked. Once again Super Easy stretched out and lengthened. Super Easy was racing to the outside of Cash Luck with Shuttle Man (JAP) and Saimee were coming fast on the outside of Super Easy.

However, once Super Easy found clear racing room showed an outstanding turn of foot he surged to the line and in the final strides he had the win by a neck over Cash Luck and Shuttle Man in third, the margin 3/4L.

“It is relief more than anything he is just an amazing horse I am just privileged to be able to train a horse like that,” said Freedman.

“I have been involved in racing for a long time in Australia and now here and I think this horse is right up there with some of the good ones I have had anything to do with back in Australia as well.

“I think they should show that ride to a few of the apprentices, when things don't go to plan and they didn't for Joao, he got back a lot further than anticipated and that can happen in racing but true champion qualities from Joao.

“I must say at the 200m mark I thought we were going to be an unlucky runner. Joao is something special and so is the horse.”

“I will sit down tonight and have a chat to the owners but the Melbourne spring is a real option I am really keen to take him down and I have such faith in this horse and I really do feel he could represent Singapore really well,” he said.

Joao Moreira was visibly relieved after the race after having plenty go against him in the run.

“Unfortunately I did not have many runs to go through at the top of the straight so I had to be waiting and waiting, in the last 300m there was an opening and I went through but unfortunately before I got there it closed up," said Moreira.

“I then tried my luck on the inside and he just kept fighting to the line and he has a very big heart.

“I thought as long as I could get a gap to go through I could win, he was traveling very well and I knew if I got the run he would smash them and that is what he did.

“Everything Michael has done with the horse has been the right thing. He has found the right races for him and to get 10 wins this early is not easy and I am a lucky boy to sit on his horses.

“He is a very good horse and I must say I did not give him a very good ride and I want to apologise to the owners and I know I made them scared, but the horse got there for me, but all credit must go to the team that works with this horse," he said
