Injuries Signal End For Drunken Sailor

The racing career of eight-year-old import Drunken Sailor appears to be over due to injuries suffered at Caulfield last Saturday.

The Mike Moroney-trained veteran broke down in the G1 Underwood Stakes, finishing last when having his first start sicne a 12th in the Sydney Cup in April.

Moroney confirmed that x-rays had revealed bone chips in a fetlock.

"They are in an awkward position. We'll have them looked at in the next few days before a decision is made on his racing future,' Moroney said.

Drunken Sailor was originally trained in Ireland by Paul Flynn where he won six races including a hurdle at Gowran Park before he joined the Luca Cumani stable at Newmarket.

Cumani took Drunkien Sailor to Dubai in 2010 where he won two of his three starts. Back in the UK he won the March Stakes at Goodwood to earn his first trip to Australia for that year's spring carnival where he race dtwice for failuires in the Geelong Cup and Queen's Cup at Flemington.

Cumani again took Drunken Sailor to Dubai in 2011 where he was unplaced three times before he regained top form back in the UK with wins in the Aston Park Stakes at Newbury and Glorious Stakes at Goodwood.

Those wins earned him a second trip to Melbourne where he failed in the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups before joining the Moroney stable.

In seven starts this year for Moroney Drunken Sailor missed a place only twice including a win in the Listed Roy Higgins Quality at Flemington, seconds in the G2 Adelaide Cup and Listed Mornington Cup and third in the G1 BMW at Rosehill in April.

Drunken Sailor has raced 49 times for 12 wins and 17 placings for prizemoney of almost $1.15 million.
