Bennetta In Stylish Win At Canterbury

3 minute read

Randwick trainer Graeme Begg produced the Corumbene Stud home-bred three-year-old filly Bennetta for a stylish win in the Bowermans Office Furniture Benchmark 75Handicap at Canterbury on Saturday.

It was Bennetta's maiden win after four starts with a second over 1200m at Rosehill on December 15th leading into Saturday's race. The win showed she is progressing well and Begg will now set a further program of progression for her over the 2013 Sydney Carnival.

Bennetta was well ridden by James McDonald tracking the leader She's A Stalker through to the main straight and then he waited patiently until the 100m.

McDonald then eased Bennetta out from the wake of She's A Stalker and away the filly went to a clear cut 2 1/4L win.

She's A Stalker was second with Rebel Dancer third, the margin 1 1/4L.

The equal $3.40 favourite Springs Reward, with She's A Stalker, reared at the start and lost four lengths. Jockey Corey Brown tacked the first starter Lonhro filly onto the field with 800m and went wide on the turn for a run but Springs Reward was not able to run on.

“It was not an easy race today but we have had faith in her,” said Begg.

“We stepped her up running in a benchmark rather than running her in a maiden. She has not had a lot of luck in her three previous starts, but she is a filly that is going places.

“I feel she has a lot of quality about her and there will be better things seen of her in the future."

“They just went a nice tempo and I cruised up past them and hit the front,” said McDonald.

“She has a lot to learn and she is a super filly. She is still to furnish out and she is big already so it is going to scary when she does come back,” he added.
