In-form Sydney trainer Guy Walter is considering a tilt at the Queensland Derby with classy three-year-old Toydini, who brilliantly won the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes at Randwick this afternoon.

Toydini burned to the front about 200m from home and let down impressively to finish almost four lengths clear of his nearest rival. Hawkspur and Bradman ran on well to fill out the minor placings while the well-backed Tatra faded late on after leading most the trip.

Walter will step the horse up to 2000m in the Frank Packer Plate in two weeks before heading to Queensland.

“We are thinking about maybe the Queensland Derby but we will just take him a race at a time,” Walter said.

“He'll have to run well in the Packer Plate. He has to show he can run the journey but he gives the impression that he can.

“He's going somewhere.”

Just three weeks ago Toydini pr oved too good in the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m). Despite the ease of that win, Walter said he was still surprised with his flying son of Bernardini's bold showing this afternoon.

“It showed his adaptability, the pace wasn't strong and Blake had to make an early move which was a great piece of riding, he had the horse underneath him to do it.

“Before the race I said he has gone up in weight he had a bit of an awkward ally it concerned us a bit with the lack of speed and he was very impressive.

Jockey Blake Shinn orchestrated the win, settling well back on the horse before sweeping around the field 700m from home to challenge the pacesetters.

Shinn wasn't shocked with the ease of the win, but was taken aback with how quickly the horse surged around his rivals.

“I knew he had a lot of class, but I was surprised that he got there that quick,” Shinn said.

“In hindsight I got their way to early but they got some cheap sectionals mid race I respected Lunar Rise and Tatra from the previous runs, but my bloke he was a class above them.

“I respected Tatra because he had form through It's A Dundeel and the way they went mid race they went slow so I had to put him into the race but once I got their I knew I had the race sewn right up and I only coasted to the line so he didn't have an overly hard run and he is a very classy horse.”

Shinn expected the horse to handle the step up in trip.
