Run under weight for age conditions, the 2016 Ranvet Stakes is one of five Group 1 events at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday March 19.

Winner of the Caulfield Stakes before placing in both the Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup in the spring, Criterion disappointed when resuming in the Canterbury Stakes but takes a big jump of 700 metres in distance for the 2016 Ranvet Stakes.

Criterion has drawn gate three with Michael Walker in the saddle and is one of two acceptors for the David Hayes and Tom Dabernig stable, who also have last-start Chipping Norton Stakes runner-up Dibayani (Blake Shinn) from the rails gate.

Caulfield Cup winner Mongolian Khan (Opie Bosson) also steps out for the second time this autumn after a disappointing first up run, jumping from gate four.

Chris Waller makes up a third of the 2016 Ranvet Stakes field with Weary (Zac Purton) in barrier nine, Storm The Stars (Hugh Bowman) in eight and Kool Kompany (Craig Williams) in six.

John O’Shea runs Hauraki (James McDonald) from gate two after two good placings so far this autumn with Melbourne visitor The United States (Kerrin McEvoy) jumping from stall seven and Bohemian Lily (Tommy Berry) from five.

The United States was taken back from the gates to settle down in last position on the fence. He travelled well in the run and improved his position along the fence approaching the home turn, before taking a run between runners at the 300m, hitting the front at the 250m and drawing away to score a most taking victory. Hauraki settled down in sixth position on the fence on the inside of Criterion. He travelled well in the run taking the home turn three wide before being held up for a run. He was forced to barge out into the clear and quickened up well, but could not run down the winner who got first run. Criterion put in a much better performance. He settled down in seventh position on the outside of Hauraki. He improved his position three and four wide before taking the home turn on the outside of the field. He loomed up looking a winning chance at the 300m but tired a little on his run to finish third.
