Capitalist filly tops Magic Millions Tasmanian sale.
A Capitalist filly sold 20 minutes out from the end of the session claimed honours as the top lot of this year's Magic Millions Tasmanian Yearling Sale, which was held on Monday.
The Grenville Stud-prepared filly, who is out of the Fastnet Rock mare Sunrise Yellow, was bought by former trainer Peter Morgan, who bought in partnership with Gall Bloodstock.
It was the first time in five years Morgan had attended the Tasmanian sale and he said there was one reason he was there.
"She was all I was coming for, as I wasn't coming to the sale, but Graeme McCulloch rang me three times and said, 'you've got to come for this filly', so I thought I'd come down and have a look," Morgan said.
"I jumped on the plane, had a look and we've ended up with her."
The Capitalist filly was one of three six-figure lots for the sale, joining the Stratosphere half-sister to Turk Warrior who sold to Star Thoroughbreds and Randwick Bloodstock for $105,000 and a $100,000 colt, also by Stratosphere, who was sold to John Foote.
That trio were all sold by Grenville Stud, who also had the equal-fourth highest-priced lot of the sale, a filly by Territories who sold to Foote and Swettenham Stud for $90,000.
Those four lots helped Grenville pip Armidale Stud for leading vendor honours with their 21 lots selling for $1,115,000 at an average of $53,095.
John Blacker bought more lots than anyone else – seven – while Adam Trinder's $329,000 spend across six horses was the greatest amount spent by one buyer.
All up, $3,937,500 was spent at an average of $36,124, at a clearance rate of 84.5 percent, which made it the second-best Tasmanian sale behind last year.
The 2022 sale grossed $4,314,500 at an average of $38,522 with a $30,000 median, which was the same as this year's.
"It was really positive for Tasmania," Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch said.
"There was a good spread of buyers - no one really got in and dominated the market - and there was great equilibrium with the interstate participants and the local buyers. It felt fairly good throughout the day.
"At the end of the day, Tasmanians bought 50 horses, which is great. They bought half the catalogue and the leading two buyers are local. It is great they have been able to participate (strongly)."
The Tasmanian sale is not the only Magic Millions offering of the week with attention now shifting to the other side of the country with the Perth sale to be held on Thursday and Friday.
