On the day that Widden Stud announced the retirement of glamour colt Jacquinot, Swettenham Stud has announced a slight increase in fee for his sire Rubick for the upcoming breeding season.

The son of Encosta De Lago, who will stand his second season at the Nagambie property, is up to $27,500 (including GST), which is up from $22,000 last season.

Since then Rubick has had Jacquinot win a Golden Rose and C F Orr Stakes at Group 1 level, having also won Group 2 races with Shades Of Rose and Glint Of Silver and seen Bound For Home win at Group 3 level, which has justified the hike according to Swettenham general manager Sam Matthews.

"He was $35,000 (before GST) a few years ago with no Group 1 winners and he's had five Stakes winners this season," Matthews said.

"He's doubled his tally of Stakes winners, he definitely warrants the increase and I think he's probably one of the best value stallions around."

The sire of 2019 The Everest winner Yes Yes Yes covered 156 mares in his first season at Swettenham, having covered just 42 mares in his final season at Coolmore, where he had been one of the most active stallions in 2018 and 2019, covering 525 mares across those two seasons.

This season's results combined with his increased popularity has Matthews confident the best may be yet to come for Rubick.

"His sales results have been really good, his racetrack results have been even better and he's still got big books to come through," he said.

Rubick will be one of five occupants at Swettenham Stud this season with the decision made not to shuttle Highland Reel back for another season after a stint in Japan.

Toronado remains the headline act with the son of High Chaparral unchanged from his 2022 fee of $88,000.

Swettenham's other three stallions, Wooded ($22,000), Puissance De Lune ($14,300) an I Am Immortal ($13,750) are also unchanged from last year.
