The overhaul the race now known as the Randwick Guineas was partly-inspired to enhance the race's status as a stallion-making race.

Originally called the Canterbury Guineas and run over 1800m at the track of that name, the Group 1 event relocated to Randwick and switched to 1600m in 2006.

The most recent colt to win, The Autumn Sun, retired the most high-profile member of his crop of freshman stallions, while his Arrowfield Stud barnmate Dundeel can lay claim to being the most successful winner under its current moniker.

The son of High Chaparral has thrown seven Group 1 winners, headline by ATC Sires', Champagne Stakes and Golden Rose winner Militarize, who is favoured to add a fourth Group 1 to his CV in Saturday's $1 million event.

The Chris Waller-trained colt who will one day take up residence at Newgate Farm is one of three colts by Dundeel in Saturday's race, joined by Celestial Legend and Fukubana.

The latter is a relation to another Randwick Guineas-winning colt.

The Matthew Dunn-trained Fukubana is out of the Lonhro mare Sekiyama, who is from the family of Inference, winner of the 2017 Randwick Guineas.

Sekiyama is out of Kanzan whose dam Cherry Lodge is a half-sister to Liberty Rose, the dam of Pontiana, whose first foal was Inference.

Inference holds a place in history as the first Group 1 winner for So You Think.

Fukubana demonstrated early that he had ability that could justify the $250,000 Dunn and Neil Jenkinson paid for him at the 2022 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, winning easily at Eagle Farm on debut last July before a narrow second placing at Rosehill at his only run as a two-year-old.

He returned with a third placing at Doomben in January, ahead of a strong win over 1200m on February 10 before a fourth placing in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) won by Celestial Legend.

Fukubana will start from barrier three in the 11-horse Randwick Guineas with Tommy Berry to take the ride.

The three sons of Dundeel are among nine colts engaged in this year's Guineas, the others being Tom Kitten (Harry Angel), Ganbare (Maurice), Les Vampires (Pierro), Ducasse (Trapeze Artist), Ceolwulf (Tavistock) and Cafe Millenium (Not A Single Doubt).
