A look at the top progeny by Fastnet Rock, who has been retired from stud duty
A noticeable omission from Coolmore's list of stallion fees for the 2024 season was Fastnet Rock, who has been a mainstay of the Coolmore roster since retiring from racing in 2005.
The global giant announced over the weekend that the 22-year-old son of Danehill had been retired from stallion duty.
The Australian Champion Stallion of 2011/12 and 2014/15 has stood in Coolmore barns either side of the equator and produced 193 individual stakeswinners, 43 of them at the highest level, with his progeny banking more than $261 million.
Below is a look at his sons and daughters who have made the biggest impact on the Timeform scale.
128 – ATLANTIC JEWEL: Widely regarded as Fastnet Rock's best product, the Mark Kavanagh mare won 10 of her 11 starts, including four at Group 1 level, and was edged out by a star in Dundeel in her only defeat. Ran to 128 in three of her wins – G2 Wakeful Stakes, G2 Sapphire Stakes and G1 All Aged Stakes – 127 once, 125 twice and rated at least 120 in her final eight starts.
128 – FOXWEDGE: John O'Shea's classy colt pulled his big number in the G1 William Reid Stakes of 2012, when he defeated Hay List. Also ran to 123 in defeat, when fourth behind a trifecta of stars – Black Caviar, Hay List and Buffering – in the Lightning Stakes.
126 – FASCINATING ROCK: The Dermot Weld-trained entire was Fastnet Rock's highest-rated Northern Hemisphere product, posting his career peak when winning the G1 Champions Stakes at Ascot in 2015. He also ran to 125 twice in the G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup, once winning and once in defeat, and owns another 123 run and one of 122.
126 – MERCHANT NAVY: A winner of the G1 Coolmore Stud Stakes in 120+, he ran 126 in his only two UK starts; the G1 Greenlands Stakes at the Curragh and the G1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.
126 – WANTED: Ran to 123 in five-straight runs as a 3YO, the last of which was the unforgettable G1 Newmarket Handicap of 2010 when he returned his peak figure.
124 – SMART MISSILE: Ran 122+ when handing Sepoy his first and only defeat as a 2YO in the Todman Stakes, elevated to 123+ in his G3 Run To The Rose win at his first start as a 3YO and then went 124 at his next start when narrowly beaten by Manawanui in the G1 Golden Rose.
124 – MOSHEEN: Had the misfortune of being a contemporary of Atlantic Jewel, but cashed in on her absence from the 2011 VRC Oaks to amble home by nine lengths in 124. Won three other Group 1 races, including an Australian Guineas in 122 and Vinery Stud Stakes in 120.
Fastnet Rock had 14 others rate at least 121 on the Timeform scale, including 123-raters Torcedor and Super Cool, First Seal, Your Song, Dreamforce and Awesome Rock – who all ran to 122 – and 121 mares Sea Siren and Via Sistina.
