Prowess is the latest mare to sell for seven figures after topping $1 million in a standalone auction held by Gavelhouse that concluded on Thursday afternoon.

The daughter of Proisir got to NZ$1,452,500, which is $1,324,306 Australian, after which no further bids were lodged.

The winning bidder operated under the pseudonym Downtown, who was later confirmed by Gavelhouse to be an operator out of Australia.

Dean Skipper, who headed up the ownership group in Prowess, who won eight of her 12 starts, including the Bonecrusher Stakes (2000m) and Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) at Group 1 level and last year's Group 2 Crystal Mile at The Valley, was thrilled with the result.

"It's a great result for us and a great result for her, and now she can go on to the next phase of her career and get every opportunity to succeed," Skipper said.

"Going into this auction, anything was going to be a bonus. We buy horses to race, not sell.

"We had our fun with her and got a fantastic return, along with some memories that we're going to have forever.

"So, to cap it all off with this auction result tonight, we're just really stoked. We couldn't have asked for anything more."

Prowess's sale comes just over a week after Espiona sold for AU$4.15m via a Magic Millions virtual auction and came in a year that Imperatriz set a new Australasian broodmare record of $6.6m.

The five-year-old is now one of five mares to sell for more than NZ$1m on Gavelhouse, which sold Avantage for $4.1m in 2021.

Baggy Green, the dam of Tofane, sold for $1.75m, Spanish Whisper $1,202,500 and Amarelinha $1.1m.
