Super Good a shoo-in

3 minute read

A debutant for an in form stable and ownership that is unbeaten at the trials looks a shoo-in for Golden Horseshoe Preview tonight.

Super Good is the juvenile first starter for the Michael Freedman stable and the Joy N Happiness ownership, with the green and red horizontal lines unmistakable colours currently cleaning up in Singapore.

The fifth race on the card is the S$95K Golden Horseshoe Preview over 1200m and it is the equal highest staked event on the Kranji card tonight.

The money that youngsters can run for over this series is extraordinary and a handful of trainers have made sales sorties to specifically select two-year-old prospects.

Super Good cost $170,000 at 2011 Premier Yearling Sale at Karaka from the New Zealand Bloodstock sales and is unbeaten in two trials.

The colt is by the boom sire Fastnet Rock and out of the six-win mare Tonic, which scored at Listed level in three of her successes.

Tonic as a dam has left the one-race winners to date in La Tourneau (by Lonhro) and Comic Ruler (by Commands).

She herself was a good miler that could close like a freight train or sit poised then explode to leave her opposition shaken and stirred.

Her brother Bohemian Dancer and half brother Sentire both ended up handy stayers, so in Super Good you have a long term prospect for Singapore over the several seasons and with a wide distance range.

Stephen Baster, who is flying at Kranji and a much sought after rider, has ridden Super Good in both trials and has done a good impression of a statue on the colt both times.

He sat outside the pace in the first trial win and in the second did the same early before taking the front across the top then just cuddled the youngster in the run home.

Super Good has the build and manners of a well-schooled juvenile that can get out and going early then make the others look super bad at the finish.

Team Freedman have their eyes on the training premiership this year and rightly so with such an impressive conveyor belt of young horsepower coming into the stable all the time.

It is safe to say the Joy N Happiness Stable like the word 'Super' starting of the names of their charges with obviously the locally undefeated Super Easy (8 wins) making their racedays/nights rather joyful.

They have a Super Guru (5 wins), a Super Spur (1 win) and now a Super Good.

I am predicting they will soon name a filly purchase Super Freak and the classic Rick James song will be used when it comes back to scale a Kranji winner!

If the great Rocket Man hears Elton John on his way back to the birdcage then why not a Super Freak and Rick James?

The danger to Super Good in the Golden Horseshoe Preview is clearly the impressive debut winner Master King, which scored commandingly for Laurie Laxon and Joao Moreira.

There is no Moreira tonight or for a couple more meetings afterwards as he serves out a suspension but an in form Danny Beasley will ride the youngster.

I liked the strength of Master King the closing 200m and the gelded son of Due Sasso in the vertical red and blue stripes does look a readymade quinella.

He has to give Super Good and the rest of the field 2kg for the win but with juveniles at this stage it is more about their tractability.

Three other first starters in the field all have some scope but cannot match the top two for power at the moment.

Dragon Wish trialled nicely behind Super Good and Barend Vorster rode and will stay with the Niello colt, while Kaiser Bright (half brother to Secret Party that has won twice in Singapore) was third in the same barrier heat and looked ready.

Kaiser Bright is trained by Hideyuki Takaoka, who is known for his expertise and patience with stayers, so for him to run a juvenile is significant.

Smart Dragon is bred to show up early and his half-sister Love's A Sequalo has won five races to date.

The winning roll of the Joy N Happiness Stable and Team Freedman is a relentless juggernaut and Super Good is aptly named but also no surprise that it is a Laurie Laxon runner in Master King offering the resistance tonight.

Enjoy the baby dash for cash.
