Racing and Sports highlight our standout plays at Australian TAB meetings for January 5.
Australian thoroughbred TAB meetings are today held at Lismore, Gilgandra, Mornington, Naracoorte, Albany, Wodonga and Alice Springs.
LISMORE: RACE 3 @ 3:00 PM
GROOVY DAY (4) won well first-up and has been sound in two subsequent runs including a close second at Murwillumbah. Draws nicely and hard to hold out. MANIC LIGHT (7) resumed with a handy placing on a heavy track at Ballina and tends to improve with the run under the belt. Definite chance. ALF'S MAGIC (5) boxed on okay to run third at Murwillumbah last time and has claims. GOLDEN GATE (1) and BOWDARCIE (8) are worth including.
SELECTIONS: Groovy Day to win.

GILGANDRA: RACE 4 @ 2:45 PM
GREAT SOUTHERNLAND (10) improved sharply last start at the second run of the prep, coming from last on the bend to get up for second over 1200m at Mudgee. Kept fresh since that run a month ago. Drops 3kgs under today's scale and looks well placed to finally break through. INJAIR (11) drifted back from a wide gate then quickened nicely in the run home to just miss the placings last time out over 1200m at Tamworth. Can race closer from a slightly better draw. Very fit and should be peaking. BRANDYWINE (8) recorded her seventh minor placing from thirty starts when she stormed home but just missed over 1400m at Dubbo recently. Back in trip isn't ideal. Each-way. The lightly raced WOTASTATEMENT (5) battled on well for third in the Brandywine race at Dubbo last time. Has a wide gate to overcome but a top four finish is not out of the question. Market watch on ZOUGO BOSS (1) first-up from a two-month let-up for a new stable.
SELECTIONS: Big chance for Great Southernland to finally break the ice.
MORNINGTON: RACE 4 @ 3:05 PM
MARY ELIZA (10) was good on debut at Seymour behind Seindeel, who has since come out and run second in a BM70 at Flemington. Mary Eliza should take plenty of benefit from that and she'll relish the rise to 1500. Looks nicely placed to break through. OUR EMMBAR (4) just found one better at Geelong last time out, beaten 0.8 lengths. Up in trip now should suit the daughter of Dundeel. BRAZEN FLING (5) has been solid in two runs back from a spell, beaten just 1.5 lengths at Geelong over 1421m last start. She should get a soft trail here and prove hard to beat. MATRON SAMSING (11) wasn't far away at Sale last start, just her second career start. She's a possible improver from a good gate. ANNABELLE SUNSHINE (1) can sneak into the finish.
SELECTIONS: Mary Eliza to win.
ALBANY: RACE 7 @ 4:55 PM
The feature of the day now and AVOIDANCE (8) goes on top following a brilliant effort at Pinjarra last time out. Stepping up to 1230m is no issue and he has the pace to be prominent from his low barrier. He's beautifully placed on his home track and he's the one to beat. COOL MEMORY (3) is a Listed winner over further last campaign, but he resumed in good order over 1200m in Saturday company last time out. He was 40-1 there, but the form out of the race has been solid and he's placed 2/2 in his second-up efforts. Can use his strength to his advantage. DEFENDING (6) hasn't been far away in recent efforts but will need some luck from an outside barrier. He's been performing strongly in strong races at Ascot and Team Pearce use Faithfull with success. Sure to be in the finish. SUPERSESSION (1) is usually around the mark in races like this and has claims. BAYEZID (2) has trialled well since winning nicely at Geraldton and is a winning hope.
SELECTIONS: Keen on Avoidance in the feature.
WODONGA: RACE 4 @ 12:40 PM
PERI PERI RICH (2) found it a bit tough at Caulfield two back then ran a much better race in similar class to this last time when runner-up. Close to a win and drawn to have every chance. VAMPIRE MISS (7) came home strongly last start to finish third, beaten 1.2 lengths, over 1612m at Werribee when returning from a spell. Solid prospects. COOMOROO LADY (6) was a close-up fifth fresh, beaten a couple of lengths. Nice return and is a second-up winner. Expecting improvement. CANNY DEFENSE (1) raced in that same race as Coomoroo Lady and finished alongside her. Drawn well and looks a strong contender on best form.
SELECTIONS: Stay with Peri Peri Rich.
