Potential-riddled Rockhampton four-year-old Sporting Page is after a fourth win from his fifth career start in the XXXX Gold Class 4 Handicap (1050m) on his home track this afternoon.
Pat Donnollan’s son of Written Tycoon resumed in superb order against Class 2 opposition at this track two weeks ago over 970m off a pair of barrier trial wins and should improve even further today.
He settled midfield in his latest effort, racing pretty tight at the top of the straight before hitting the front 150m out and pulling away from them.
He had a tendency to lay in over the final 100m but was otherwise dominant in beating a modest field, netting a weight-adjusted Timeform figure of 73.
Impressively he carried 59kg to victory which is what he’s been assigned today.
He goes up in grade for this but it’s unlikely that a Class 4 Handicap at Rockhampton will be his limit.
Don’t be surprised to see this speedster up in open company later this campaign, or even floated back down to Brisbane to take on the big boys.
His only career defeat came at the end of last campaign when he finished four lengths adrift of the handy Bribie at Doomben but in fairness to Sporting Page he looked to be at the end of his tether, and was spelled immediately after that run.
No harm was done given his first-up effort – his third win from as many starts at Rockhampton.
Expect him to settle midfield again today from barrier four, and don’t be surprised if he puts a length or two on them in the concluding stages.
Second-up Private Chat looks one worth considering at the weights.
He was fair resuming in Class 3 grade over 1200m in what’s proven to be a reasonable form reference and drops to just 55.5kg up to this grade.
That latest run produced a weight-adjusted Timeform figure of 68, something he should be able to improve sharply today.
He’s a second-up winner who was running very well in open three-year-old grade last campaign, and looks a danger here if he can recapture his best.
Arrested For Speed finished second resuming at this track in Class 3 grade last time, running to a weight-adjusted figure of 68.
He drops to 55kg for the jump up in grade and can give them something to think about.
