Captain To The Fore In Singapore

3 minute read

Promising galloper Mycaptainoblivious is set to make his return at Singapore on Friday night and appears well placed to bring up his third career victory.

Having only missed the money twice in 10 career starts the son of Captain Rio has shown plenty of ability for the Shane Baertschiger stable culminating with a career peak performance at this very track and trip two starts back.

Though unable to bring up the hat-trick prior to a spell, his performance behind Speed Demon had plenty of merit as the overall figures recorded out of the event were very strong.

Adding to that the return to the polytrack on Friday night appears to play right into his hand as he is unbeaten in two prior attempts on the synthetic surface.

Renowned for his ability to set a solid tempo up front before quickening again in the straight, the now rising five-year-old is expected to lead on Friday night despite drawing awkwardly.

The Desmond Koh trained Cast Dot Com is also expected to press forward from the good draw however it is unlikely he will be able to match Mycaptainoblivious's early speed.

Though it always a danger that the two leaders could run each other into the ground, with no weight on his back the latter should have little issue finding the front and if Cast Dot Com does kick up and hold the lead, expect Matthew Kellady to just sit off him in second.

On Timeform weight adjusted ratings Mycaptainoblivious sits well clear of his rivals on career best form and given he has trialled well in the lead up, all does appear to be in good order.

While yet to win fresh he has placed in two of three attempts and given this is now his second preparation under Baertschiger, he is expected to have a better handle on the four-year-old and the amount of work required to get him ready to fire first up.

Formerly based in New Zealand, Baertschiger was successful in seeing Mycaptainoblivious reach his previous career best last time in and he is expected to take the next step this campaign.

Currently striking at 20% with horses racing first up Baertschiger has developed an affinity for getting his horses right up to their mark and if that is the case with Mycaptainoblivious he does appear very hard to beat.

The Laurie Laxon trained Double Star finally put it all together last start when saluting at this track and does appear capable of notching up back to back wins.

Having continually been right around the mark the son of Ishiguru appreciated a solid tempo when working home strongly to score narrowly over 1200m.

Dropping back slightly in trip on Friday night doesn't appear a major concern as he does appear to get the race run to suit again.

From the awkward draw he is expected to settle down midfield and with the aid of the claim he doesn't appear harshly treated.

Though he does still have a bit to find on Mycaptainoblivious, assuming Double Star holds his form he is expected to be right in the finish again.

The Steven Lam trained Double Cash showed a sharp return to form last start when ridden forward and expect Santana to adopt similar tactics again on Friday night.

After setting a good tempo out in front the son of Dubleo gave a good kick in the straight and stuck on strongly to hold off the late charge from Kingsley.

Whether he can lead Mycaptainoblivious remains to be seen however given he is drawn on the inside of his rival, it could result in him finding a lovely spot just of the leading duo.

While some question marks do remain over his last start effort given he has struggled with consistency, if he is in fact able to repeat that level of performance he does shape as one of the main contenders.

Of the rest the Alvin Tan trained Gato Negro cannot be taken lightly in this event despite his plain run of form in recent outings.

Having been safely held behind his stablemate Perfect Challenger at his past two starts he does appear far better suited in this event and should appreciate the step up to 1100m.

If you take a line through his performance at this track and trip three starts back he does possess solid winning claims and commands respect.

Good luck and happy punting.
