Who Wins The Fifth At Bathurst?

3 minute read

Last start provincial winner Charlie Who can continue his progression through the grades at Bathurst on Tuesday.

Charlie Who heads to Bathurst 19 days after a last start success in a Class 2 at Wyong over 1200m.

The Myboycharlie gelding was a slender winner of the event and returned a Timeform rating of 79 in the process.

It was an encouraging performance by the four-year-old who has returned this campaign off a generous spell following a late season three-year-old preparation which produced a string of strong results.

A last start winner at Wyong, the gelding appears suited dropping back to country company for the Bathurst RSL Club Benchmark 70 Handicap (1400m).

The fifth event of the day at Bathurst seems somewhat short on depth and Charlie Who can be a main beneficiary of that here.

He is building a strong record and on weight adjusted 12 month and 50 day Timeform ratings, the gelding sits prominently amongst this field.

The main concern surrounding Charlie Who at Bathurst on Tuesday is a step up from 1200m to 1400m.

Connections have raced him over 1400m in the past though where he performed fairly, running a 3.5 length sixth in the 2015 Scone Guineas behind the likes of Loved Up and Nayeli.

In a small field, expect jockey Greg Ryan to ride the Matthew Smith-trained runner positively and the pair should take some holding out.

Final Over shapes as a clear danger with the mare dropping back from provincial level after a string of solid results.

Her latest outing which came over the mile at Kembla Grange returned a Timeform rating of 74 which on weight adjusted figures for this race sees her on top.

Now having her sixth run from a spell, the mare probably is unlikely to build on that rating however while top elect Charlie Boy possesses far greater upside.

Showmaster is chasing a third straight success after winning at this course and distance 22 days ago.

While he faces rivals here who possess solid provincial form, Showmaster must be given some consideration from an inside draw with an unbeaten record at this track.

Next Level is another who ventures to the country after a last start outing at Provincial level.

The son of More Than Ready struggled first up over 1200m at Newcastle, beaten more than six lengths.

The Gary Portelli-trained runner will at least strip fitter for the outing though and has placed in two of his three prior second up outings.
