The Cliff Brown trained Athena has displayed plenty of ability in her short career to date and appears well placed to make a winning return in Singapore this evening.
Due to contest the second event, Athena is yet to break through from four starts but is already Group 2 placed and notably boasts form through Jupiter Gold.
Off the scene for 222 days, Athena was tuned up with a recent barrier trial (23/02) finishing third behind Premier Fighter. On that occasion she shouldered 67kg and wasn't asked for a great deal, allowed to coast to the line under Michael Rodd.
Although safely held, she found the line nicely under her own steam and all appears in good order for her return this evening.Prior to a break she tipped the scales at 530kg, so she is certainly a sizable filly and also gives the impression she will be better with time.
While she may lack the match fitness, Athena makes up for it with her class and should receive all the favours from the inside draw.Rizuan Shafiq links aboard the first time and is expected to either lead or track the speed.
When assessing Timeform weight adjusted ratings, she is clearly the top pick and while unlikely to be at her best, she doesn't have to be.The form from her two-year-old campaign is very strong and if able to build off that this time in, she is sure to be winning races.
The Stephen Burridge trained Commando Eclipse has been solid in both starts to begin this campaign and should be right at his peak racing third up.From the good draw he looks to receive a charmed run in transit and if able to repeat the level of performance, he is expected to make his presence felt.
The Hideyuki Takaoka trained Optimum Star has steadily improved with each performance to date and should appreciate the drop back in trip.Unable to see out the trip behind Siam Gemstone last start, his performance still held merit and he rates well on best form.
Jockey Derrick David sticks aboard and he looms as a major threat.Of the rest the Cliff Brown trained Copacabana appears the next in line, with Rodd appearing a key booking.
While unable to feature in three starts during his maiden preparation, he still displayed fair ability and with two trials under the belt, he should be forward enough to sprint well fresh.Good luck and happy punting.
