Best From The West - May 23

3 minute read

The luckless Rebel King gets his chance to make amends on Saturday when set to contest the sixth event at Belmont.

Having made his return behind the talented Sheidel two back, the son of Universal Ruler should arguably have won when forced to ease off heels at a vital stage.

Flashing home late, Rebel King was only narrowly beaten and quickly put the writing on the wall that he was in for a bumper preparation.

Sent around odds-on second up, he again was unlucky when trapped three-wide without cover throughout.

Fighting on strongly to the line, he was only narrowly edged out in the shadows with the Eric Wake trained Dueton sneaking up along the rail.

Rated equal to his first up performance, Rebel King is expected to springboard off the mark racing third up.

In six attempts over this trip he is yet to miss the money and last start was his first ever defeat at Belmont, having won four of five.

Apprentice rider Chloe Azzopardi links aboard for the first time and notably is striking at 20 per cent with the Darren McAuliffe stable.

This season the McAuliffe stable is striking at 22 per cent with gallopers racing third up and overall is striking at 64 per cent with odds-on favourites (POT of +8.3%).

Having bet better than even money during the week, $1.90 is the best price currently on offer and although short, we still have a bit of room to move on that price.

If priced aggressively we can get him as short as $1.60 and hence he still presents a good overlay.

To those who did snap up the early price - good shopping!

In the final event the Trevor Andrews trained Paseo Del Prado presents good value at his current quote and has to be kept safe.

A winner of five of 32 starts, including a further 14 minor placings he is rarely far away and comes into this off a game performance behind Brother Patrick last start.

In six attempts at the mile he has placed on five occasions and has placed in six of seven attempts at Belmont.

Sean McGruddy links back aboard, he has placed in five of eight attempts and Paseo Del Prado should receive all the favours from the inside draw.

Currently installed a $12 chance appears a more than worthy gamble as he is officially a "box-ticker."

We have him marked half that price in our market and while he hasn't done a lot of winning, he is still expected to make his presence felt.
