We preview Wednesday night’s Devonport Cup with a big, competitive field assembled.

Plenty of chances in this year's Devonport Cup with a few form lines coming together.

The highest rated horse at the weights here is comfortably Cartoon Graveyard who comes through the Tasmanian Stakes when fourth to The Inevitable.

The Timeform rating there of 99 is a bit of a tricky one however, as he was very much suited sitting close to a slow tempo which compressed the margins to some degree.

The start before, Cartoon Graveyard ran second at Devonport over 1650m to the very much in form General Assembly, 1.5 lengths adrift there but now meeting that horse 4kg better off.

General Assembly has since won over the 1650m again, taking the Kevin Sharkie Sheffield Cup with a strong front running performance.

He set a strong tempo on that occasion but kept finding to win, the sectionals showing that he did actually go a bit too fast in front, while the fast-finishing Asva charged into second, the sectional markup suggesting there was very little between them.

Off that run I don't see any reason to doubt General Assembly at the longer trip and from the draw he should get every chance again.

The other horse that creates some interest with a peak rating that can win this is Kaliuwaa Falls who also comes through the Tasmanian Stakes, finishing fifth, 1.8 lengths off the fourth placed Cartoon Graveyard.

The tempo there was farcical and Kaliuwaa Falls's last 600m was only bettered by The Inevitable. He'll relish getting to 1880m and should enjoy a stronger tempo here.

It's also worth noting he's a winner over the course and distance and he looks absolutely primed to peak here.

Going to back two horses here against the favourite Cartoon Graveyard, who is a strong winning hope, but the sectionals of Kaliuwaa Falls behind that horse last time were very sharp and he should be charging late off a strong tempo.

General Assembly is flying on the synthetic of late and should handle the rise in trip with no worries, either leading or taking a trail from barrier two.
