Mornington Mail - March 24

3 minute read

It might be Golden Slipper day but the Victorian meeting heads to the Peninsula for Mornington Cup day.

Golden Mane

We’ll touch on that race but there are also some promising horses on the card. It could be a day for big prices.

For the value let’s go first to the Cup and give Golden Mane an each way play.

He keeps running honest races from around the speed over the 2000m. Finally he steps up in distance which has to help.

Not over this trip for two years, he brings in that Homesman/Almandin form line from the Mornington Cup Prelude.

Given how those two ran in the Australian Cup, just a little improvement could be enough.

Racing down on the limit now at 2400m won’t hurt much either and you take on Lindsay Park in a Cup race at the moment at your peril.

We will also get a good price about Silent Command who takes on the Mornington Guineas.

He goes first up at the mile but that can be a positive decision as his two wins are over that journey.

Back in the September he won the Morphettville Guineas. In that he defeated Bring Me Roses by a head so that stands up.

They’ve secured Linda Meech so hoping he rolls over the field and gets on the pace which is rarely a bad idea at this track.

Ladbrokes Mornington Cup (LR)

WT: 54kg Type: OPEN

Unbeaten in five starts in Australia (all this year), a sixth win (maiden stakes) in eight starts and now automatic entry into the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m), Kings Will Dream blitzed this field, racing away by five lengths to win very impressively. With a lap to run he settled fifth, one off the fence, maintaining his position about four lengths from the lead at the 1400m. Rider Dean Yendall urged the favourite a little closer down the side easing four wide past the 400m and was travelling very well, taking over the pace into the straight. Clear by two lengths at the 200m he then left them to it, racing away to win in a canter. Harrison led from the start, down the side and almost to the home straight where he was headed but kept on well for a distant second. Fastnet Dragon tracked the winner into the straight and did best of the rest for third from Gallic Chieftain who battled away for a distant fourth.
