With short-priced favourite Most Improved withdrawn in the morning owing to lameness, on paper the Newmarket G3 looked quite open.
Then up stepped Trumpet Major who was most impressive storming up to the finish with a 5 lengths margin to Crius who chased but couldn't catch, and Easter Sun who did it tough out on his own for much of the race. Born to Surprise blew the start and couldn't catch up.
There was a thrilling finish in the Earl of Sefton when William Buick persuaded Questioning to just give that extra bit which led to a head win over Twice Over. Beatrice Aurore finished third. Many of these will benefit from the run as they weakened when it came to the last 100-200 metres.
