Best From The West - February 25

3 minute read

The Simon Miller trained Red Paddy was a real eye catcher last start and can atone in the final event at Ascot on Saturday.

An impressive winner two back, Red Paddy was set quite the task at Pinjarra last start and while finishing fifth, his performance held plenty of merit.

Dragged back to last from the wide draw, he was left with plenty to do and while rocketing late, his task was just too great.

The return to Ascot will no doubt suit (placed 9/13) and the solid tempo should also aid his chances.

Red Paddy has placed in both attempts over this trip and appears well placed when assessing Timeform weight adjusted ratings.

Leading rider Peter Knuckey legs back aboard, having placed in five of eight attempts about the five-year-old.

As much as 5-2 is being offered about his chances, which seems fairly generous, as if on his 'A' game, he looks to have a fair bit up his sleeve.

No question his racing pattern is low percentage, however if the track is playing fairly, Red Paddy should prove very hard to hold out.

The Listed Lex Piper Stakes has assembled quite the handy line up with the Darren McAullife trained Gatting well placed to return to the winner's stall.

Caught on the wrong part of the track at Pinjarra last start, he found the line well over 1200m and is sure to relish the step up to the mile.

On best form he is very well placed under the set-weights conditions and has drawn to receive all the favours.

Gatting has only missed the money once in his career and is clearly a talent.

While lining up against a few promising types, he appears to have them covered and should prove very hard to beat.
