Godolphin gelding Gaulois has been knocking on the door this campaign and gets his chance to break through at Sunshine Coast on Saturday.
The four-year-old lines up in the Sunshine Coast Cup over 1400m and it looks a race to suit.
Key to his chances is the addition of blinkers for the first time and he comes into this race off a four-week freshen up, though he has been kept up to the mark with a barrier trial in Sydney last week.Gaulois made his Queensland debut last start in the Bernborough Quality over a mile, a race where he settled near the rear and raced wide throughout but still made good ground in the straight for a 1.6L fourth.
That came after he had kicked off his campaign with two placings in Sydney before he was beaten only 3.2L in the Villiers Stakes. The drop back to 1400m off a freshen-up looks ideal as Gaulois excels at the distance, recording two wins and two placings from his four attempts.
Larry Cassidy goes into the saddle and with the aid of a low draw he should be able to get the gelding into a winning position.Front-running gelding Cabeirian could take some catching in the last race on the program, the Coastline BMW Z4 over 1400m.
The four-year-old showed what he is capable of when he led and raced away for an easy 3L win over 1350m at Doomben last start. He deserved that victory after placing at his previous three starts and it was his second success at this distance range.
Ryan Wiggins knows Cabeirian well now having ridden him in his last two outings and the pair should be able to roll forward into the ideal position from gate two.Cabeirian enjoys a 4kg drop in the weights on the last-start win and the light impost could see him hard to run down.
