Best From The West - February 21

3 minute read

The promising Say Geronimo appears well placed to make a winning return at Ascot on Saturday, when set to contest the fifth event.

Although failing to salute the judge last time in, the son of Mastercraftsman matched it with some of West Australia's leading three-year-olds and was a notable third in the Guineas behind Disposition.

Stepping up to 1800m prior to a break, Say Geronimo once again held his own, when only narrowly beaten in Listed company.

Allotted the grandstand (61.5kg) on the weekend, Say Geronimo still appears well placed using Timeform weight adjusted ratings and will only carry 58.5kg after Aaron Mitchell's claim.

In seven career starts, he has only missed the money once - finished fifth in the Listed Fairetha Stakes, beaten less than two lengths by Disposition.

The latter has the form and profile to be a genuine winning hope in the Australian Guineas, and he looks undervalued in early betting.

Although lining up against a few promising types: Disco Metal, Angel Sky, Orright and Binky Toy — Say Geronimo has already put up form well ahead of his rivals.

As while there appears plenty of blue sky ahead for the above, the fact remains he too can improve, being only lightly raced.

Kicking off over 1400m appears more than ideal — emphasised by his ratings profile.

Currently marked 5-2 appears a more than worthy gamble, as if priced aggressively we have him marked the 5-4 favourite.

If able to return anywhere near his peak, Say Geronimo simply should prove too good for his rivals.

The Daniel Harrison trained Flytego also appears a great betting opportunity, when set to contest the seventh event.

A clear model of consistency this time in, the son of Flying Pegasus has placed in 10 of his last 12 starts and brings form to the table, ahead of his rivals on Saturday.

Although unable to run-down the Simon Miller trained Temporise last start, the early tempo was simply against and his closing sectionals were very strong.

On the quick back up (placed 2/3) Flytego presents good value at 3-1, as we currently have him marked the 6-4 favourite.

From the good draw, he is likely to settle just off the speed and prove very hard to hold out in the straight.
